Job Description

Senior Firmware Engineer

\n

\n

Location: San Diego, CA (Primarily on-site)

\n

\n

Summary

\n

We're seeking a Senior Firmware Engineer to own the embedded firmware architecture and development for our next-generation medical device platform. This is a hands-on, individual-contributor role focused on writing, architecting, and owning firmware end-to-end — from driver-level work through system integration — working closely with hardware, systems, and external development partners to bring the platform from design through verification and production.

\n

\n

Responsibilities

\n

    \n
  • Own firmware architecture and technical roadmap, including driver development, RTOS integration, connectivity, and UI/embedded software work
  • \n

  • Design, write, and debug embedded C firmware for STM32/MCU-based platforms, including peripheral-level work (GPIO, ADC, timers, PWM, UART, SPI, I²C, DMA, interrupts)
  • \n

  • Review and provide technical direction on firmware architecture developed by external firmware partners, including build, release, and configuration management processes
  • \n

  • Diagnose and resolve issues spanning the hardware/firmware boundary, working closely with electronics/board engineers during bring-up and debug
  • \n

  • Define and execute firmware-level verification test plans in collaboration with Quality
  • \n

  • Keep firmware development activities aligned with Design Controls, IEC 62304, and IEC 60601 requirements
  • \n

  • Support technical investigations for field issues, NCRs, and CAPAs related to firmware
  • \n

\n

\n

Key Requirements Summary

\n

    \n
  • 6+ years of embedded firmware experience, with demonstrated ownership of firmware architecture
  • \n

  • Strong embedded C, RTOS-based systems (FreeRTOS or similar), STM32/MCU peripheral-level development
  • \n

  • Comfortable working across the hardware/firmware boundary — able to support board bring-up and debug alongside hardware engineers, even without owning board-level design
  • \n

  • Experience reviewing or coordinating firmware work delivered by external development partners a plus
  • \n

  • Medical device/regulated industry experience strongly preferred (IEC 62304, IEC 60601)
  • \n
