Location: Sterling Heights, MI
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8AM-5PM
Pay Range: $54-59/hr

Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer – Embedded Systems to provide both hands-on software development and technical leadership for advanced real-time embedded systems supporting complex defense and munitions programs.

This position combines approximately 60% hands-on software design and development with 40% software technical leadership, making it an excellent opportunity for an accomplished embedded software engineer who wants to remain deeply involved in development while taking greater ownership of technical execution, project planning, and team leadership.

The Senior Software Engineer will lead software efforts across one or more program initiatives, supporting the complete development lifecycle from requirements analysis and architecture through implementation, hardware/software integration, verification, and system-level testing. The successful candidate will bring strong C++ embedded development experience, RTOS and/or bare-metal expertise, and experience leading small software development teams.

Military experience equivalency may substitute for some requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a technical lead for real-time embedded software development efforts supporting complex defense and munitions systems.
  • Maintain an approximately 60% individual contributor / 40% technical leadership workload, remaining actively engaged in software design, development, integration, and troubleshooting.
  • Lead software engineering activities throughout the complete development lifecycle, including estimating, planning, requirements analysis, architecture, design, implementation, unit testing, integration, verification, and system-level testing.
  • Design and develop object-oriented C++ embedded software for real-time applications.
  • Support software development in RTOS and/or bare-metal environments.
  • Lead and coordinate a small team of software developers while providing technical guidance, mentoring, task prioritization, and engineering oversight.
  • Monitor execution of software engineering efforts and implement corrective actions when necessary to maintain technical, cost, and schedule objectives.
  • Support hardware/software integration, integration testing, simulated flyout testing, and range testing.
  • Partner with the Software Verification Lead to develop verification strategies, plans, environments, test scripts, and procedures.
  • Support the development, execution, debugging, and technical review of software verification tests.
  • Coordinate software activities with Program Engineering Managers, functional engineering leadership, and other multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Provide technical oversight of software development performed by external subcontractors when applicable.
  • Apply established software engineering processes, configuration practices, and development standards throughout program execution.
  • Support planning and execution activities associated with Earned Value Management System (EVMS) and Control Account/Work Package management responsibilities.
  • Conduct technical meetings, design discussions, reviews, and presentations with engineering and program stakeholders.
  • Identify technical risks, communicate project status, and drive software issues through successful resolution.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or another relevant STEM discipline.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in real-time embedded software development and/or software testing, or 2+ years with a relevant Master's degree.
  • Strong hands-on experience with object-oriented design and C++ embedded software development.
  • Experience developing real-time applications using an RTOS and/or bare-metal architecture.
  • Practical knowledge of modern software engineering principles, processes, and development methodologies.
  • Experience supporting software throughout requirements, architecture, design, implementation, integration, and verification activities.
  • Experience with hardware/software integration and testing.
  • Familiarity with Ethernet communications.
  • Working knowledge of Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) and Control Account Manager (CAM) and/or Work Package Manager responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a small group of software developers or engineers.
  • Ability to provide technical direction while remaining actively engaged in hands-on software development.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and technical problem-solving capabilities.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across software, hardware, systems, test, and program organizations.
  • Ability to lead productive technical meetings, engineering discussions, design reviews, and presentations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing embedded software for defense, aerospace, munitions, vehicle, or other mission-critical systems.
  • Experience with embedded software architecture and low-level hardware interfaces.
  • Experience supporting complex software verification and validation activities.
  • Experience developing or executing automated software verification test scripts and procedures.
  • Experience with simulated system testing, hardware-in-the-loop environments, or field/range testing.
  • Experience providing technical oversight of subcontracted software development.
  • Familiarity with formal configuration management and Software Quality Assurance processes.
  • Experience operating within cost and schedule constraints on complex engineering programs.
  • Previous experience serving as a Software Technical Lead, Integrated Product Team contributor, or similar technical leadership role.
