Staff Software Engineer – Full Stack

Henpen Consultants is recruiting a Staff Software Engineer to develop customer-facing command-and-control software for mission-critical systems.

This hands-on role combines full-stack development, software architecture, and technical leadership. You will help build sophisticated single-page applications and backend services that support real-time telemetry, operational data, and complex workflows.

What You’ll Do

• Architect and develop complex, data-driven single-page applications.
• Design backend services, APIs, and data flows supporting real-time information and operational workflows.
• Lead full-stack technical design, emphasizing scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
• Establish architectural standards, engineering patterns, and code-quality practices.
• Guide decisions about application structure, service boundaries, and system integrations.
• Troubleshoot performance and reliability issues across the software stack.
• Conduct architecture and code reviews.
• Mentor engineers and clearly communicate technical decisions and tradeoffs.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
• 8+ years of engineering experience with a bachelor’s degree, or 6+ years with a master’s degree.
• Proven experience designing and delivering substantial production software systems.
• Strong full-stack development skills, including frontend architecture and backend services.
• Ability to independently write, troubleshoot, and maintain software.
• Strong analytical, communication, and technical leadership skills.
• Experience solving complex engineering problems in an environment that requires disciplined execution and accountability.

Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools is welcome; candidates must demonstrate independent coding ability and sound engineering judgment.

Preferred Experience

• Python and TypeScript.
• Complex data visualization and design systems.
• Operational or decision-support applications.
• Real-time, mission-critical, aerospace, or defense software systems.

Location & Work Environment

This position is primarily office-based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with a strong preference for on-site collaboration. Hybrid arrangements may be considered. Relocation assistance is available.
