Consultadd is a government technology consulting firm that places experienced technology professionals with public-sector clients. This position supports a client in Madison, Wisconsin that is establishing an in-house software development team.
Position Summary
The Senior Cloud Backend Developer serves as the lead backend engineer on a small product team consisting of a product manager, software developers, and a dedicated quality assurance engineer. The team supports a long-term custom application, and this position has meaningful influence over its architecture, engineering standards, and development practices.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working through ambiguous, unsolved technical problems and serves as the team's anchor for engineering best practices. Candidates with 8–9 years of strong, relevant experience are encouraged to apply.
Core Requirements & Stack Preferences
- Primary Stack: .NET 8, Microsoft Azure, React 19 (exact-version experience preferred; deep React expertise is not required).
- Engineering Focus: Senior-level cloud backend development with a strong emphasis on APIs and DevOps.
- SDLC & Quality: Small, human-reviewable commits, daily code check-ins, branching strategy, and code reviews.
- AI Practices: Sound judgment regarding AI-assisted development—using it as a tool with mandatory human review.
- Teamwork: Experience maintaining a shared codebase within a team of 3+ engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain cloud-based backend services and RESTful APIs using .NET 8, C#, and Microsoft Azure.
- Build, maintain, and improve CI/CD pipelines, build automation, and release processes.
- Establish and uphold SDLC standards and conduct thorough code reviews.
- Define and model responsible AI-assisted development practices.
- Investigate and resolve complex, open-ended technical problems.
- Design and optimize relational database schemas, queries, and data access layers.
- Mentor mid-level developers and collaborate across cross-functional roles (PM, QA, BA, UX).
- Troubleshoot production issues and perform root-cause analysis.
Qualifications
- Professional Software Development: 8+ years (10+ preferred)
- Backend (.NET / C#): 6+ years (8+ preferred)
- Cloud Development (Azure): 4+ years (5+ preferred)
- SQL / Relational Databases: 5+ years (7+ preferred)
- RESTful API Design: 5+ years
- DevOps / CI/CD Pipelines: 3+ years
- Automated Testing (xUnit/NUnit/MSTest): 3+ years
- React: 2+ years (working knowledge)
- Team Development & SDLC Leadership: 5+ years sharing codebases; 3+ years leading code reviews.
Preferred Qualifications
- Microsoft Azure Certifications (AZ-204, AZ-400).
- Infrastructure as Code (Bicep, ARM, Terraform) and containerization (Docker, AKS).
- Event-driven architecture (Azure Service Bus, Event Grid).
- TypeScript, microservices, and legacy .NET modernization experience.
- Prior public sector or utility experience.
