Job Description

The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for supervising maintenance personnel and overseeing maintenance activities to ensure food processing equipment, utilities, and infrastructure operate safely, reliably, and in compliance with regulatory and food safety requirements. This role supports the facility’s SQF-certified food safety and quality management system by ensuring equipment is maintained in a sanitary condition and that maintenance activities do not pose food safety risks. The position requires oversight of OSHA safety programs, including Lockout/Tagout (29 CFR 1910.147), confined space, electrical safety, and supervision of boiler, wastewater treatment, and ammonia refrigeration system support activities. Essential functions must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.


Work Environment

  • Food processing and packaging facility
  • Exposure to machinery, electrical systems, confined spaces, ammonia refrigeration systems, boilers, and wastewater equipment
  • Temperature variations, including hot, cold, and refrigerated environments
  • Possible exposure to allergens, chemicals, lubricants, steam, wastewater, and ammonia
  • PPE required, including safety footwear, gloves, eye/face protection, hearing protection, arc-rated PPE, and respiratory protection (as applicable)

Compensation:

$80,000 - $90,000 Yearly Plus Bonus


Responsibilities:

Essential Functions

Maintenance Supervision & Planning (SQF – Equipment & Infrastructure)

  • Supervise, schedule, and assign maintenance technicians and contractors
  • Plan and coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance activities
  • Prioritize work orders to support production schedules and food safety requirements
  • Verify maintenance activities are completed safely, correctly, and documented

Food Safety & Sanitary Maintenance Oversight

  • Ensure maintenance activities are performed using hygienic maintenance practices
  • Verify protection of food-contact and product zones during maintenance
  • Review equipment and utility conditions for potential food safety, allergen, or foreign material risks
  • Coordinate with QA and sanitation to release equipment for production

Lockout/Tagout Program Oversight (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147)

  • Administer and enforce the facility’s Energy Control Program
  • Verify authorized employee training and compliance with LOTO procedures
  • Review and approve equipment-specific LOTO procedures
  • Audit LOTO activities and correct non-conformances
  • Investigate and document LOTO-related incidents or deviations

Electrical Safety Oversight (OSHA / NFPA 70E Awareness)

  • Ensure electrical work is performed only by trained and authorized personnel
  • Enforce electrical safety procedures, PPE requirements, and arc-flash controls
  • Verify equipment is de-energized and safe prior to servicing
  • Identify and escalate electrical hazards or deficiencies

Confined Space Program Oversight (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146)

  • Administer and enforce the Confined Space Entry Program
  • Ensure permit-required confined space entries are properly planned, authorized, and documented
  • Verify training and authorization of entrants, attendants, and entry supervisors
  • Coordinate atmospheric testing, rescue provisions, and contractor compliance

Ammonia Refrigeration System Oversight (OSHA / EPA Awareness)

  • Provide supervisory oversight for maintenance activities involving anhydrous ammonia refrigeration systems
  • Ensure ammonia-related work is performed only by trained and authorized personnel or qualified contractors
  • Enforce compliance with site ammonia safety procedures, emergency response protocols, and PPE requirements
  • Verify that preventive maintenance, inspections, and documentation for ammonia systems are completed
  • Coordinate with environmental, safety, and engineering teams on ammonia system integrity and risk management
  • Support compliance with applicable OSHA PSM (29 CFR 1910.119) and EPA RMP requirements, as applicable to the facility

Boiler & Utility Systems Oversight

  • Supervise maintenance activities supporting boiler systems and plant utilities
  • Ensure boiler operations and maintenance comply with internal procedures and regulatory requirements
  • Coordinate with licensed or certified boiler operators as required
  • Review utility system performance and escalate abnormal conditions

Wastewater Treatment Oversight

  • Oversee maintenance support activities for onsite wastewater treatment systems
  • Ensure wastewater equipment is maintained and monitored per environmental requirements
  • Coordinate with environmental staff or third-party service providers
  • Support environmental compliance inspections and reporting

Safety, Regulatory & FSMA Compliance

  • Enforce OSHA safety requirements and site safety policies
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions
  • Support FSMA Preventive Controls related to equipment and facility maintenance
  • Participate in safety committees and continuous improvement initiatives

Documentation, Audits & Verification (SQF – Records & Review)

  • Review and approve maintenance, utility, LOTO, confined space, and ammonia system records
  • Ensure documentation is complete, accurate, and audit-ready
  • Support internal audits, regulatory inspections, and third-party certification audits
  • Implement corrective actions and verify effectiveness

Training, Coaching & Performance Management

  • Train, coach, and evaluate maintenance personnel
  • Identify competency gaps and schedule required safety and technical training
  • Support succession planning and skill development

Attendance & Reliability

  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance
  • Provide on-call or off-shift support as required

Marginal (Non-Essential) Functions

  • Support capital projects, equipment installations, or system upgrades
  • Participate in reliability, safety, or continuous improvement initiatives
  • Perform other supervisory or technical duties as assigned

Physical Demands (ADA-Compliant)

  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, and access production, utility, and mechanical areas
  • Ability to lift or carry up to 40–50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to visually inspect equipment, gauges, and documentation
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a manufacturing environment

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Prior supervisory experience in food manufacturing or regulated environments
  • Ability to supervise maintenance operations in a regulated manufacturing environment
  • Ability to enforce safety programs and regulatory compliance
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills


Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical degree preferred
  • Extensive experience with maintenance and PM programs
  • Authorized employee designation under LOTO
  • Confined space program oversight experience
  • Electrical safety or NFPA 70E awareness training
  • Familiarity with anhydrous ammonia refrigeration systems
  • Awareness of OSHA PSM and EPA RMP program requirements (as applicable)
  • Familiarity with boiler systems and wastewater treatment operations
  • Experience in SQF or BRCGS-certified facilities
  • Familiarity with LIMBLE
