Job Description

Safety and Security Coordinator
Full-Time | Non-Exempt | Saturdays & Sundays, 10:30 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
Hours may vary based on operational needs, special events, staffing, or organizational priorities.

St. Vincent de Paul of Baton Rouge is seeking a calm, compassionate, and observant Safety and Security Coordinator to help maintain a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment for the neighbors we serve, as well as our staff, volunteers, and visitors. In this role, you will focus on de-escalation, situational awareness, and preventing problems before they start, rather than on enforcement.

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Safety and Security Coordinator serves as a visible and approachable presence across the SVDP campus. You will get to know our regular guests and their needs, respond to safety concerns, step in early to prevent escalation, and support staff through challenging situations using trauma-informed, person-centered approaches. Through this work you will help carry out the mission of St. Vincent de Paul with dignity, compassion, and excellence.

What You'll Do

  • Maintain a consistent on-site presence to promote safety and deter unsafe or disruptive behavior.
  • Monitor facility access, conduct routine safety checks, and ensure compliance with organizational safety protocols.
  • Observe and assess potential safety risks, and take appropriate, proportionate action.
  • Use verbal de-escalation techniques to calm tense or emotionally charged situations, intervening early to reduce the likelihood of harm.
  • Support staff during challenging interactions with neighbors or visitors.
  • Identify environmental or behavioral risk factors and recommend preventive measures.
  • Maintain a visible, approachable presence in the dining room, shelter, and common areas, greeting neighbors and volunteers by name and building rapport over time.
  • Respond to emergencies, behavioral crises, or safety incidents according to established procedures, and serve as the point of contact until leadership or emergency responders arrive.
  • Contact emergency services when necessary, assist with scene stabilization, and recognize when a situation requires supervisors or emergency responders.
  • Participate in emergency drills and support ongoing safety planning efforts.
  • Document incidents, safety concerns, and interventions accurately and on time, in accordance with organizational policy.
  • Work closely with program staff, supervisors, and leadership to maintain a coordinated, mission-centered approach to safety.

Who We're Looking For

  • Someone who stays calm, professional, and steady in high-stress situations and can make quick, measured decisions.
  • A compassionate, service-minded person who values treating every individual with dignity and respect, including neighbors experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, or substance use disorder.
  • A high school graduate or GED holder.
  • A candidate with prior experience in security, safety, loss prevention, or a related field.
  • Someone with experience in human services, shelter operations, or crisis response. This is strongly preferred.
  • A strong communicator with proven conflict-resolution skills.
  • An individual with training or experience in de-escalation, crisis intervention, or trauma-informed care. This is preferred.
  • A person with experience serving vulnerable populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness or behavioral health challenges. This is preferred.
  • A candidate who holds CPR/First Aid certification, or is willing to obtain it, and who has training in Narcan administration (preferred).
  • Someone who holds a security guard certification or license, if required by state or local regulations.
  • A person who maintains professional boundaries, practices cultural humility, and conducts themselves ethically.
  • A candidate who is able to stand and walk for extended periods across indoor and outdoor areas, respond quickly to emergencies, climb stairs, and lift up to 50 pounds if necessary.
  • Someone willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.

St. Vincent de Paul of Baton Rouge is a Catholic lay organization dedicated to serving individuals and families in need. If you are looking for meaningful full-time work where your presence and judgment help keep our community safe and welcoming, we invite you to apply.
