BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Chief of Safety and Security is responsible for the operation of the Department of Safety and Security, including the in-house security operation and the gatehouse operation (point of sale, traffic control, and security). The Chief of Safety and Security is responsible for the implementation of policy to direct the employees of the department. The Chief of Safety and Security directs the staff and the organization of the department, and is responsible for the complete handling of all incidents which are reported to the department including, but not limited to, property loss/damage, medical emergencies, security breaches, and vehicle damage. The Chief works on risk management issues in a continual attempt to reduce exposure; prepares and administers the Safety and Security budget; reviews and updates the Emergency Response Guide; and is responsible for the protection of life and property at Mohonk Mountain House.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

•Reviews and approves all Mohonk incident reports, ensures accurate recording and filing of all incident reports.
•Prepares employee performance appraisals to ensure compliance with company and department standards. Signs off on all appraisals.
•Makes recommendations and participates in the safety committee.
•Prepares and administers the safety and security budget.
•Is responsible for the development, implementation, maintenance, and training of all departmental Standard Operating Procedures to include patrol functions, conduct, and response to situations.
•Is responsible for the development, implementation, maintenance and training of the emergency evacuation guide and determines the roles that each position fills during an emergency evacuation.
•Is responsible for the development, implementation, maintenance, and training of the emergency operator procedures.
•Maintains positive working relationships with local law enforcement, fire and EMS agencies, the Mohonk Preserve rangers, and the Mohonk Fire Brigade.
•Develops procedures, monitors, and controls vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
•Develops rules and regulations to include employee vehicle registration, parking and enforcement.
•Oversees all radio and paging communications equipment; assesses the needs and makes recommendations, develops policy, authorizes users, maintains all F.C.C. Licenses.
•Conducts confidential investigations and surveillance as necessary.
•Conforms to Smiley Brothers, Inc. Policies and Procedures.
•Directs the response to emergency situations.
•Ensures a safe and secure environment for guests and staff.
•Leads the electronic key control plan and system, ensures its efficient operation.
•Maintains a system of risk management in on on-going attempt to continually reduce the company’s exposure to liability.
•Provides the gatehouse with operating procedures and customer service guidelines.
•Participates in the Mohonk Preserve / Smiley Brothers, Inc. coordination committee.
•Responds to any safety and security needs of resort guests.
•Places phone calls to all those injured while at Mohonk Mountain House and processes the reimbursement due to injury, property damage, or property loss.
•Is responsible for monitoring and responding to the overall systems involved with electronic alarm systems, i.e. Notifier fire alarm, burglar alarms, cold and heat alarms, etc.
•Hires, trains, schedules and manages personnel in the Department of Safety and Security.
•Approves all staff and employee communication within the department.
•Reviews and approves requests for time off; ensures round-the-clock security staff coverage.
•Participates in the weekly management group meeting, engineering meeting, and staff meeting.
•Approves all purchase requisitions within the department of safety and security.
•Ensures that the gatehouse follows sound accounting practices.
•Provides emergency medical care.
•Responsible for all portable fire extinguishers and ensures that they are checked monthly and conform to state guidelines. Arranges for extinguishers to be recharged.
•Maintains records and incident reports regarding employee incidents and ensures compliance with company safety policy.
•Promotes strong guest relations through personal performance and that of staff. Actively supports the Mohonk Mountain House service program.
•Directs the operation of all in-house security, outside patrols, and gatehouse operations.
•Responds to any needs relating to safety and security of our guests, visitors or employees.
•Reports hazards, and makes observations on issues which affect the safety and security of our guests, visitors and employees.
•Inspect the work of others by touch, sight, sound and smell for conformance to prescribed standards.
•Receives complaints. Investigates and documents incidents, according to Standard Operating Procedures.
•Carries a two way portable radio and wears an earpiece to communicate and provide immediate response to emergency situations.
•Wears proper uniform at all times. Maintains and cares for uniforms.
•Maintains records and writes detailed reports in accordance with Safety and Security Department Standard Operating Procedures.
•Provides traffic control and enforcement of Traffic Rules and Regulations.
•Adheres to and enforces company policies and procedures.
•Wears proper personal protective equipment appropriate to the task being performed
•Familiarizes self with and uses Mohonk Mountain House 14 Service Steps with Service Strategies.
•Promotes safe and secure working procedures in a manner which is perceived as helpful and friendly.
•Becomes familiar with Mohonk Mountain House’s electronic safes and able to troubleshoot/repair.
•Maintains a flexible work schedule including days/nights, weekdays/weekends, holidays, and during peak periods of business.
•Physically able to transverse the property, both inside the Mountain House and outside grounds for the purpose of patrolling, performing designated rounds, processing and parking cars, emergency response, and other designated tasks.
•Stands in a stationary position for long periods of time for the purpose of patrolling functions.
•Uses necessary equipment such as hand held portable radios, keyboard for both computer terminal and fire alarm panel, flashlights, key rings, first aid and firefighting equipment.
•Safely lift and carry heavy loads of at least 75 pounds from ground to waist level, for long periods of time and on rocky and steep terrain. Walks up to 5 miles per day.
•Operates a motor vehicle with either a standard or automatic transmission and perform routine care of that vehicle.
•Works in stressful situations and under pressure. Must be able to adapt to changing priorities. Acts calmly in emergency situations.
•Analyzes problems and develops and implements action plans to address problems.
•Speaks, reads, and writes the English language and communicates in a clear and congenial manner, with our guests, visitors, and employees. Hears verbal instructions, directions, and warnings.
•Reads and write in a legible and orderly manner in order to prepare reports that are considered legal documents.
•Presents a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance in accordance with the Mohonk Mountain House Dress and Grooming Standards.
•Reaches with hands and arms, bends, knees, stoops, twists and flexes arms, walks up and down stairs/inclines, sits, climbs up/down ladders or stands for up to 5 hours at a time.
•Maneuvers carts or dollies safely with loads up to 300 pounds up and down stairs, elevators, through passageways or outdoors up to 500 feet.
•Sees close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
•Provides supervision of security officers.
•Explains and enforces regulations and policies of Smiley Brothers, Inc. and the Department of Safety and Security; does employee counseling when appropriate, and writes communications as needed to document unacceptable behavior.
•Uses crisis management skills as well as being able to multi-task.
•Assigns tasks as necessary or needed.
•Basic computer proficiency.

QUALIFICATIONS:

•Valid Driver’s License and at least 21 years of age, or 20 years of age with at least two years of licensed driving experience.
•Obtain New York State Security Guard certification within 6 months of hire.
•10 years of work experience in a Safety / Security related field.
•5 years certified as a NYS Emergency Medical Technician.
•CPR certified
•5 years of supervisory or managerial experience preferably in a safety and/or security field
•Experience with Microsoft software applications
•High School Graduate.
•Firefighting experience and/or training preferred
