Network Site Survey Technician

Location: Chicago, IL

Pay Rate: $50.00/HR W2 (plus travel expenses)

Hours: Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm

Duration: 1-3 months, Project starts Aug 17

*Will travel to locations throughout the greater Chicago area

Position Summary

We are seeking experienced Network Site Survey Technicians to perform comprehensive, non-intrusive network infrastructure assessments. This role is responsible for documenting existing MDF and IDF environments, validating network equipment inventories, updating rack elevations, collecting power and facility information, and capturing detailed site documentation to support future network refresh and remediation projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed site surveys of MDF and IDF rooms at assigned locations.
  • Validate and document site information, room characteristics, and facility infrastructure.
  • Inventory network equipment, including make, model, serial numbers, rack locations, and device hostnames.
  • Update rack elevations and enter asset information into Exelon NetBox.
  • Document power connections, receptacle types, circuit labeling, and power distribution details.
  • Verify equipment labeling and apply standardized labels where permitted.
  • Identify and inventory out-of-service or abandoned network equipment.
  • Capture high-quality photographs and, where available, Matterport or other 3D scans of network spaces.
  • Update or create floor diagrams identifying MDF and IDF locations.
  • Prepare and submit complete survey documentation, reports, and supporting artifacts for site acceptance.
  • Coordinate site access with escorts for secure and restricted facilities.
  • Ensure all work is performed without impacting production network operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience performing network infrastructure site surveys or data center assessments.
  • Knowledge of MDF/IDF environments, rack layouts, and structured cabling infrastructure.
  • Ability to identify and document network equipment, rack elevations, and power distribution.
  • Familiarity with network hardware including switches, routers, UPS systems, PDUs, and related infrastructure.
  • Experience documenting assets using inventory management or DCIM platforms (NetBox experience preferred).
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills.
  • Ability to travel extensively between customer locations.
  • Comfortable working in data centers, telecommunications rooms, and secure facilities.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Matterport or other 3D imaging technologies.
  • Experience creating or updating facility floor plans.
  • Background in network infrastructure, telecommunications, or data center operations.
  • Knowledge of structured cabling standards and rack best practices.
