Position Summary
The Information Systems Specialist I, II, or III will provide hands-on technical support for personal computers, peripherals, software, network-related equipment, user accounts, and enterprise applications. This role is responsible for installation, configuration, troubleshooting, maintenance, upgrades, repairs, documentation, and responsive customer service for onsite users.
The position may be filled at the Information Systems Specialist I, II, or III level based on candidate experience. The selected candidate will work fully onsite in Downtown San Diego and may provide backup support, emergency response, and after-hours coverage as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide highly responsive hardware and software support services for computer users and ensure issues are managed and resolved in a timely, professional manner
- Follow up with users to confirm satisfaction and resolution quality
- Install, configure, test, maintain, upgrade, and troubleshoot workstation computers and peripheral devices
- Maintain server operating systems and services as assigned
- Support network interfaces and connections between system components
- Complete software installations and support users in the operation of new and existing software
- Establish and maintain user accounts, user-related network resources, security access protocols, and related systems
- Perform routine research, analysis, and problem diagnosis
- Consult with internal and external technical staff when required
- Repair or replace equipment as necessary
- Complete basic or non-routine repairs at user locations or in a workshop setting
- Ensure more complex repairs are completed by vendors or outside contractors
- Take obsolete equipment out of service and record asset disposal using established systems
- Serve as backup for other Information Systems staff in a mutually supportive team environment
- Respond to system failure, maintenance emergencies, system issues, network alerts, and equipment maintenance needs
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma supplemented by two years of college coursework or training programs in computer information systems, data processing principles, computer operations, operating software programs, or a related field
- One to four years of increasingly responsible experience providing hardware and software support services for computer users
- Experience providing desktop, server, network, and enterprise application support services in an integrated information systems environment
- Experience installing, configuring, testing, maintaining, upgrading, and troubleshooting computer systems, peripheral devices, and network operations
- Knowledge of and experience working with Windows and macOS systems
- Ability to assist employees with varying levels of computer expertise
- Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely to staff with varying levels of technical sophistication
- Ability to diagnose and repair problems with computers, peripheral devices, and network-related equipment
- Knowledge of workstation peripherals, switches, routers, 1000BaseT Ethernet, and PC hardware
- Experience compiling and maintaining records, logs, databases, and inventories of computer service-related information and equipment
- Ability to lift and move workstations, monitors, and peripherals
- Ability to use hand tools and access work areas beneath desks and tables
- Ability to think logically and analyze technical information, written manuals, equipment mechanisms, and parts
- Ability to work independently while following prescribed routines and procedures
- Ability to complete concurrent assignments efficiently and responsively
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a service-oriented team
- Ability to perform physical activities including lifting heavy items, standing for extended periods, bending, climbing, and walking
- Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment criminal background investigation and periodic criminal background re-checks
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field
- Training and/or certification in relevant information systems, desktop support, networking, or technical support disciplines
- One year of related experience for Information Systems Specialist I level
- One or more years of increasingly responsible Information Systems experience equivalent to an Information Systems Specialist I for Information Systems Specialist II level
- Four or more years of increasingly responsible Information Systems experience, including three or more years equivalent to an Information Systems Specialist II, for Information Systems Specialist III level
