The Maintenance Technician works onsite in the parking garage at Union Station in Washington, DC, supporting the upkeep, safety, and appearance of the facility. This is a hands-on, first-shift role focused on general maintenance, repairs, and preventive care, requiring comfort working on your feet all day in an open-air environment and in varying weather conditions.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine electrical tasks such as changing lightbulbs and ballasts throughout the garage.
- Complete painting work including touch-ups in bathrooms, offices, parking lines, walls, and other areas as needed.
- Handle basic plumbing tasks such as unclogging toilets and addressing minor issues to keep restrooms operational.
- Replace and install doorknobs, locks, and other hardware, and hang items as required around the facility.
- Clean up spills on the property, with particular attention to oil spills and other substances that may impact safety or appearance.
- Walk the facility regularly to identify items that need repair or attention and collaborate with quality assurance to improve overall conditions.
- Perform preventive maintenance on equipment, including checking tire pressure, charging batteries, and maintaining wipers and other components.
- Complete and update daily work orders, accurately documenting tasks completed, follow-up needs, and reporting status to supervisors.
- Deliver courteous and helpful customer service to all garage users and visitors.
- Support general outdoor and parking garage maintenance tasks to ensure the facility remains clean, safe, and well-maintained.
- Work within established procedures and safety guidelines while performing maintenance activities.
- Effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities during the shift to ensure timely completion of work.
Essential Skills
- 4+ years of maintenance experience in a hands-on role covering multiple facets of repairs and facility upkeep.
- 1+ years of experience working in different weather conditions in an outdoor or open-air environment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, including the ability to change ballasts and confidently use hand tools such as screwdrivers and other basic tools.
- Basic electrical skills related to lighting and simple repairs.
- Basic plumbing skills, including unclogging toilets and addressing minor issues.
- Experience with parking garage or similar facility maintenance.
- Ability to perform outdoor maintenance tasks and remain productive while exposed to the elements.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance practices for equipment such as vehicles and garage machinery.
- Experience working with work order tickets, including updating, closing, and reporting status to supervisors.
- Reliable punctuality and strong overall dependability.
- Ability to multitask and manage several maintenance activities during a shift.
- Availability to work weekends, including potential Friday through Sunday shifts.
- Comfort being on your feet for approximately 8 hours per day in a physically active role.
- Customer service orientation, with the ability to interact professionally and respectfully with garage users.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Hands-on experience in HVAC-related maintenance is beneficial.
- Experience in a parking garage or transportation-related facility is an advantage.
- Interest in career growth into lead roles or supervisory positions such as Assistant Facilities Manager.
- Strong communication skills to coordinate with supervisors and quality assurance teams.
- No formal certifications, medical clearances, DOT requirements, licenses, or specialized PPE are required for this role.

Work Environment
This role is based in the Union Station parking garage in Washington, DC, working primarily on the first shift. Typical hours include a 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. schedule, with an additional shift noted as Sunday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The work takes place in an open-air garage that is not heated or air-conditioned, so temperatures can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter. You will be on your feet for about 8 hours per day, moving throughout the facility to perform maintenance tasks. The environment involves regular interaction with vehicles, equipment, and customers, and requires comfort working outdoors and in varying weather conditions. There are no specific certification, medical, DOT, licensing, or PPE requirements mandated for this position.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Washington, DC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr.
