Maintenance Technician - 3rd Shift
Position Overview
We are seeking a reliable and experienced Maintenance Technician to join our 2nd shift team at a food manufacturing/copacking facility. The primary purpose of this role is to maintain and repair production equipment to maximize uptime, ensure product quality, and maintain safety and sanitation standards. The Maintenance Technician will troubleshoot PLCs and electrical systems, perform mechanical repairs, execute preventive maintenance tasks, and support continuous improvement initiatives in a fast-paced industrial environment.
Schedule: 10:30pm - 6:00am, M-F (some Saturdays if needed)
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on production equipment, including conveyors, fillers, sealers, motors, pumps, and packaging machinery.
- Troubleshoot and repair PLC controls, sensors, HMIs, and associated automation components to restore production quickly and safely.
- Diagnose and repair electrical systems up to 480V, including motor controls, starters, variable frequency drives (VFDs), relays, and wiring.
- Perform mechanical repairs and adjustments such as bearing replacement, gearbox work, belt and chain alignment, and general machining tasks when required.
- Inspect, test, and maintain pneumatic and hydraulic systems, including valves, cylinders, compressors, and hoses.
- Respond to production downtime events and participate in root cause analysis and corrective action to prevent recurrence.
- Assist with equipment installations, changeovers, and modifications, working closely with engineering and production teams to implement improvements.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, spare parts inventory, and log safety and sanitation checks in accordance with facility procedures.
- Adhere to food safety, GMP, and company safety policies; participate in safety meetings and support sanitation and allergen control programs on second shift.
- Provide training and guidance to production staff on equipment operation and basic troubleshooting as needed.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical certificate or associate degree in Industrial Maintenance, Electrical Technology, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on maintenance experience in industrial manufacturing; experience in food manufacturing or copacking environments strongly preferred.
- Proven PLC programming and troubleshooting experience (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar platforms).
- Strong electrical skills, including knowledge of motor control circuits, VFDs, transformers, and safe work practices with electrical systems.
- Solid mechanical aptitude with experience repairing conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, bearings, and general machine components.
- Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic systems, including troubleshooting and replacement of components.
- Ability to read electrical and mechanical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs, CMMS systems, and spare parts management.
- Food safety knowledge or certifications (HACCP, SQF) and experience working in sanitation-sensitive environments preferred.
- Valid forklift certification and a valid drivers license preferred; ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in varying temperature environments.
- Willingness to work 2nd shift hours, overtime, and be available for emergency call-ins; strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
