The 1st Shift Maintenance Technician oversees all industrial and facilities maintenance in a manufacturing shop, ensuring equipment and building systems operate safely, reliably, and efficiently. This role focuses on preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of a mix of older and newer machinery, with a strong emphasis on pneumatic and hydraulic systems, basic electrical work, and continuous improvement of processes.
Responsibilities
- Lead all industrial maintenance activities in the shop, serving as the primary resource for equipment repair, upkeep, and installation.
- Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive preventive maintenance schedule for all machinery and equipment.
- Order parts and maintenance supplies as needed to support repairs, upgrades, and preventive maintenance tasks.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical and electrical machinery and components to minimize downtime.
- Install, commission, and maintain a variety of equipment, including pneumatically driven machinery, small hydraulic presses, small industrial ovens, motors, radio frequency welders, vacuum formers, and rotary tables.
- Perform facilities maintenance as needed, including basic plumbing work and commercial lighting repairs.
- Handle electrical tasks involving 480V and 3-phase power, including wiring, conduit work, and basic electrical repairs.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and equipment manuals to guide installation, troubleshooting, and repair activities.
- Maintain and improve equipment performance in a plastics and foam manufacturing environment, focusing on presses, ovens, vacuum formers, and rotary machines.
- Work independently as the sole maintenance technician, proactively identifying issues and implementing solutions without direct supervision.
- Coordinate with equipment customer support for advanced troubleshooting and technical assistance on newer machines.
- Ensure all maintenance work is performed safely and in accordance with facility standards and industry best practices.
Essential Skills
- At least 5 years of industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Proven experience troubleshooting and repairing pneumatic systems, with the ability to work confidently on equipment where most operations rely on pneumatics.
- Hands-on experience with hydraulic repair, including small hydraulic presses and related components.
- Basic electrical skills, including work with 480V and 3-phase power systems.
- Ability to perform mechanical repairs, welding, and general equipment upkeep.
- Experience with installation, maintenance, and repair of industrial ovens, vacuum formers, presses, rotary machines, and motors.
- Ability to work from blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation.
- Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
- Self-starter mindset with the ability to work independently and take ownership of all maintenance responsibilities.
- Experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting, ideally related to plastics or foam manufacturing.
- Comfort working with radio frequency welders and other specialized industrial machinery.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Nice to have: Basic PLC experience for troubleshooting and minor programming adjustments.
- Experience setting up and managing preventive maintenance programs across a range of equipment.
- Background in conduit installation and electrical wiring in an industrial setting.
- Familiarity with maintenance best practices in small to mid-sized manufacturing operations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with equipment vendors and customer support for technical assistance.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple maintenance tasks and prioritize work in a busy shop environment.

Work Environment
The role is based in a smaller, family-owned industrial facility in Canton with approximately 30 employees. The shop environment is industrial and actively operating, with older equipment gradually being replaced by newer machines. While the facility is not highly organized or modern, it is well lit, climate controlled, and maintained with a focus on safety. The company manufactures foam ear pieces used on headsets for applications such as aviation and radio communications, providing exposure to specialized plastics and foam manufacturing processes. You will work on a mix of legacy and modern machinery and will occasionally contact equipment customer support for troubleshooting assistance. The work is performed on 1st shift, typically from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with overtime available as needed.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Canton, OH.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
