Position Overview

The Vice Chair of the Heart and Vascular Institute, along with the Chief of Cardiology, will be essential in promoting our organization's mission to provide outstanding cardiovascular care, in line with Vision 2030. This leadership role encompasses oversight of clinical, educational, and research functions within the cardiology department, encouraging growth, innovation, and teamwork. The ideal candidate will be a proactive leader dedicated to clinical excellence, operational effectiveness, and team collaboration.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional clinical care in both inpatient and outpatient environments.
  • Participate in on-call rotations as part of the cardiology team.
  • Lead multidisciplinary peer review processes to uphold clinical quality.
  • Identify and implement strategies to eliminate obstacles to efficient and appropriate patient care.
  • Reduce unnecessary non-invasive testing through evidence-based methodologies.
  • Ensure smooth transitions of care, including effective hand-offs between acute and outpatient settings.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Report directly to the Chair of the Heart and Vascular Institute.
  • Work closely with the Vice Chairs of Vascular Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery, as well as Practice/Service Line Leadership.
  • Collaborate with the Medical Director of Medical Specialties to oversee cardiology offices and hospital-based cardiology services.
  • Supervise cardiologists, advanced practice nurses (APNs), and physician assistants (PAs) within the organization.
  • Oversee cardiology procedures conducted in the hospital.
  • Facilitate effective communication with leadership regarding practice developments, challenges, and successes.
  • Analyze internal and external referral barriers and devise strategies to strengthen relationships with referring providers and institutions.
  • Regularly assess financial data, metrics, and performance for both practice-based and hospital-based cardiology services, ensuring alignment with budgetary objectives.
  • Develop targeted strategies for underperforming practices or physicians in partnership with the Medical Director of Medical Specialties.
  • Initiate efforts to enhance physician engagement and satisfaction within the cardiology division.

Educational and Research Responsibilities

  • Support the establishment and growth of the newly launched cardiology fellowship program.
  • Encourage a culture that values education, mentorship, and professional development among staff and fellows.
  • Advance research initiatives by creating infrastructure that supports clinical trials and academic contributions.

Performance Metrics

  • The Vice Chair will be responsible for achieving or surpassing the following metrics:
  • Timely completion of patient documentation:
    • Office visit reports dictated and signed within 24 hours.
    • Inpatient consults, procedural reports, and discharge summaries completed within 12 hours.
    • Non-invasive imaging studies interpreted within 24 hours at target levels.
  • Streamlined patient access:
    • Maintain or exceed goals for time-to-be-seen metrics.
    • Ensure customer satisfaction scores meet or exceed institutional targets.
    • Adhere to scheduled office sessions unless cancellations are communicated at least 24 hours in advance for proper patient notification.
