Work Arrangement: Fully Remote – Candidates Must Be Local to the DMV Area within commutable distance

The Opportunity

\n

A highly established and growing multifamily real estate and property management organization is seeking an Accounting Manager to join its Property Accounting team.

\n

This position will manage the day-to-day accounting for a portfolio primarily consisting of affordable housing properties while overseeing a team of approximately 3–4 accounting professionals.

\n


\n

The organization offers an exceptionally stable accounting team, strong leadership, minimal turnover, and a primarily remote work environment. Candidates must live within the Washington, DC–Baltimore region and be available for occasional in-person responsibilities.

\n

Prior Affordable Housing Property Accounting experience is REQUIRED for this position.

\n


\n

Key Responsibilities

\n

    \n
  • Manage the day-to-day property accounting activities for a portfolio primarily consisting of affordable housing communities.
  • \n

  • Oversee and review monthly financial statements, journal entries, bank reconciliations, account reconciliations, wires, and other close activities.
  • \n

  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of monthly and year-end close requirements.
  • \n

  • Review property-level financial results and investigate unusual balances or variances.
  • \n

  • Partner with Property Operations on annual budgets, reforecasts, cash funding draws, and financial reporting.
  • \n

  • Serve as the accounting lead for new property transitions, dispositions, and management transitions.
  • \n

  • Support annual audits and respond to auditor requests and supporting schedules.
  • \n

  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders regarding financial statements, distributions, tax-related matters, and other property accounting issues.
  • \n

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, accounting policies, and reporting requirements.
  • \n

  • Manage, mentor, train, and develop a team of approximately 3–4 accounting professionals.
  • \n

  • Assist other property accounting teams with additional portfolio needs as required.
  • \n

  • Maintain consistent reporting quality while managing multiple properties and deadlines.
  • \n

Hard Requirements

\n

Candidates must have:

\n

    \n
  • Affordable Housing Property Accounting experience – REQUIRED
  • \n

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • \n

  • Yardi or MRI experience
  • \n

  • 7+ years of progressive real estate/property accounting experience
  • \n

  • 3+ years of accounting leadership, supervisory, or management experience
  • \n

  • Strong understanding of property-level month-end close
  • \n

  • Experience preparing and reviewing property financial statements and reconciliations
  • \n

  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and property-level financial analysis
  • \n

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP
  • \n

  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including PivotTables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, and similar functions
  • \n

  • Ability to manage multiple properties, priorities, and reporting deadlines
  • \n

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • \n

Preferred Background

\n

The strongest candidates will have experience managing the accounting for a portfolio of multifamily affordable housing properties and understand the nuances associated with affordable housing property management.

\n

Experience with Yardi is particularly valuable.

\n
