Position Overview DOT Construction, Inc. is seeking an experienced, field-oriented QA/QC Manager to manage Quality Assurance and Quality Control activities for commercial, industrial, and residential construction projects. The QA/QC Manager will work directly with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, subcontractors, suppliers, inspectors, architects, engineers, and clients to verify that construction is performed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, submittals, manufacturer requirements, applicable codes, and DOT Construction quality standards. This position requires someone who is comfortable working in the field—not simply managing paperwork. The QA/QC Manager must be able to recognize improper installations, identify potential problems before work is concealed, document deficiencies, coordinate corrective action, and verify that completed work meets project requirements. What You Will Do on the Jobsite Quality Assurance & Quality Control · Build It Right the First Time: Establish quality expectations before construction begins and verify work meets those requirements throughout installation. · Field Inspections: Conduct routine inspections of work in progress and completed construction. · Verify Compliance: Confirm installations comply with contract drawings, specifications, approved submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, codes, and manufacturer requirements. · Prevent Rework: Identify deficient work or potential conflicts before subsequent work covers or conceals the installation. · Quality Hold Points: Establish inspection points for critical work that requires verification before proceeding. · Final Acceptance: Verify completed work is ready for client, architect, engineer, AHJ, or third-party inspection. Preconstruction Quality Planning · Review construction drawings, specifications, schedules, and contract requirements before work begins. · Develop and maintain the Project-Specific QA/QC Plan. · Establish quality inspection requirements for each major scope of work. · Develop Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) where required. · Prepare trade-specific inspection checklists. · Identify required testing, special inspections, mockups, certifications, and manufacturer inspections. · Participate in preconstruction and pre-installation meetings. · Review subcontractor QA/QC procedures before mobilization. · Identify constructability concerns that could affect quality, schedule, or cost. Drawings, Specifications & Submittals · Review architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, civil, and specialty drawings as applicable. · Verify construction is being performed using the current approved drawings. · Review approved submittals and shop drawings prior to installation. · Verify specified materials are being installed. · Confirm dimensions, elevations, tolerances, finishes, and installation details. · Track quality-related RFIs and design clarifications. · Identify conflicts between drawings, specifications, approved submittals, and actual field conditions. · Immediately communicate discrepancies to the Project Manager and Superintendent. Field Inspections & Testing · Perform documented inspections throughout each phase of construction. · Verify layout, dimensions, elevations, alignment, fastening, anchorage, installation methods, and finished appearance. · Coordinate required third-party inspections and testing. · Monitor concrete, structural steel, framing, drywall, ceilings, doors/hardware, finishes, MEP systems, millwork, glazing, and other applicable scopes. · Review inspection and testing reports. · Track failed inspections through corrective action and reinspection. · Maintain inspection records for project turnover. Nonconformance & Corrective Action · Identify and document Nonconformance Reports (NCRs) when work does not meet project requirements. · Clearly document the location, condition, responsible trade, and required corrective action. · Coordinate resolution with the Project Manager, Superintendent, subcontractor, architect, engineer, or client when required. · Verify corrective work before closing deficiencies. · Track open deficiencies until final resolution. · Investigate recurring deficiencies to determine root causes. · Develop preventive measures to reduce repeat quality issues. Subcontractor Quality Management · Establish clear quality expectations with subcontractors before work begins. · Monitor subcontractor workmanship and compliance with contract requirements. · Review subcontractor inspection documentation when required. · Verify subcontractors are installing approved materials and systems. · Require deficient installations to be corrected promptly. · Coordinate reinspection following corrective work. · Identify recurring workmanship problems and communicate them to project leadership. · Ensure subcontractors understand that quality is required throughout installation—not just at project closeout. Material Receiving & Verification · Verify critical materials against approved submittals and purchase requirements. · Inspect materials for damage, defects, incorrect products, or improper storage. · Confirm required certifications, test reports, and manufacturer documentation are available. · Verify substitutions are properly approved before installation. · Prevent nonconforming or damaged materials from being incorporated into the work. Mockups & First-Work Inspections · Coordinate required mockups before full production begins. · Conduct first-work inspections with field supervision and subcontractors. · Establish an approved workmanship standard for repetitive installations. · Document acceptable installation methods. · Use approved mockups and first-work inspections as the benchmark for subsequent construction. Punch List & Project Closeout · Perform progressive punch inspections throughout construction rather than waiting until project completion. · Maintain punch-list tracking by trade, area, and responsible party. · Verify deficiencies are corrected before turnover. · Coordinate final inspections with project management. · Assist with owner, architect, engineer, and client punch walks. · Verify completion of testing and inspection documentation. · Compile QA/QC documentation required for project closeout. · Assist with warranties, certifications, O&M documentation, testing records, and turnover packages. Communication & Documentation The QA/QC Manager must maintain clear and professional communication with DOT Construction's field and management teams. · Maintain daily or weekly quality inspection reports. · Document deficiencies with photographs and written descriptions. · Track NCRs and corrective actions. · Maintain inspection and testing logs. · Track open quality items. · Participate in project coordination meetings. · Communicate quality concerns directly with Superintendents and Project Managers. · Coordinate quality requirements with subcontractors. · Immediately escalate significant quality concerns that could affect safety, schedule, cost, or final acceptance. What We Look For in a QA/QC Manager DOT Construction is looking for a construction professional who understands that quality is managed during construction—not inspected into the project at the end. · Strong commercial, industrial, and/or residential construction experience. · Strong understanding of construction means and methods. · Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and MEP construction documents. · Strong knowledge of construction tolerances and workmanship requirements. · Ability to recognize defective or improper installations. · Strong field inspection skills. · Excellent documentation and organizational ability. · Ability to communicate deficiencies professionally and directly. · Ability to work with Superintendents and Foremen without unnecessarily interfering with production. · Ability to hold subcontractors accountable to contract requirements. · Strong problem-solving ability. · Attention to detail. · Ability to work independently. · Ability to manage multiple projects or inspection activities when necessary. · Strong ownership and follow-through. Preferred Qualifications · 5+ years of commercial, industrial, or large-scale construction experience. · Previous experience as a QA/QC Manager, Quality Manager, Superintendent, Project Engineer, Inspector, or Senior Field Engineer. · Experience developing project-specific QA/QC plans. · Experience with Inspection and Test Plans. · Experience managing NCRs and corrective actions. · Experience coordinating third-party testing and special inspections. · Knowledge of construction codes, specifications, and industry standards. · Experience with Procore or similar construction management systems. · OSHA 30 Construction preferred. · ICC, ACI, AWS, ASQ, CQM-C, or other applicable quality certifications are beneficial but not required depending on experience. Quality Leadership Expectations The QA/QC Manager is expected to be visible in the field and proactive. A successful QA/QC Manager should be able to answer: · What work is being installed today? · What inspections are required before that work proceeds? · Is the crew working from the current drawings? · Are the correct approved materials being installed? · What deficiencies are currently open? · Who is responsible for correcting them? · When will corrective work be completed? · What work will require inspection tomorrow? · What quality issues could affect the next two to three weeks of construction?
