Fire Alarm Technician
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Fire Alarm Technician to install, program, maintain, and troubleshoot commercial and industrial fire alarm systems. The ideal candidate will ensure systems are installed and commissioned to code, perform preventive maintenance and acceptance testing, integrate with suppression and lifesafety systems, and produce accurate documentation and asbuilt drawings. This role requires handson technical skill with fire alarm control panels, detectors, notification appliances, lowvoltage wiring, and familiarity with NFPA, NEC, and UL/FM standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, wire, and terminate lowvoltage fire alarm systems including conduit installation and cable pulling for new and retrofit projects
- Program and configure fire alarm control panels (FACP) for addressable and conventional systems, including Signaling Line Circuits (SLC) and Notification Appliance Circuits (NAC)
- Commission systems and perform acceptance testing per project specifications, NFPA 72, and local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements
- Perform troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repairs on FACPs, detectors (photoelectric, ionization), heat detectors (fixed and beam), duct smoke detectors, manual pull stations, and notification devices (horn/strobe, voice evacuation)
- Integrate fire alarm systems with sprinkler flow switches, fire suppression systems, emergency power/generator interfaces, and building management systems as required
- Conduct sensitivity testing, calibration, battery maintenance, standby power testing and replacement, and insulation resistance/multimeter testing
- Execute preventive maintenance and inspection routines, prepare detailed service reports and maintain testing records in fire alarm software and reporting tools
- Read and create riser diagrams, schematics, and asbuilt documentation; update system drawings after installations or modifications
- Ensure ADA compliance for notification appliances and coordinate placement/operation with AHJ and inspectors
- Work on retrofit and upgrade projects, including panel replacements, loop and circuit testing, and system expansions
- Follow UL/FM standards, NFPA 72, NFPA 70/NEC, and local building and fire codes during all phases of work
- Respond to service calls and participate in an oncall rotation as required; communicate with project managers, contractors, and clients
- Maintain tool and vehicle inventory, comply with site safety requirements, and complete required paperwork for permits and inspections
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical training, certificate, or associate degree in electronics, fire protection technology, or related field preferred
- 2+ years of handson experience installing, servicing, and commissioning commercial fire alarm systems (experience may vary by company needs)
- Working knowledge of fire alarm systems including FACPs, addressable and conventional panels, NACs, SLCs, and common field devices (smoke, heat, duct detectors, manual stations)
- Experience with panel programming, configuration, troubleshooting, and diagnostics for manufacturers such as Simplex, Edwards, Siemens, Honeywell, FireLite, and similar
- Familiarity with NFPA 72, NFPA 70/NEC, UL/FM standards and local fire/building codes; able to apply codes to installations and testing
- Proficient with multimeter and insulation resistance testing, loop and circuit testing, battery maintenance, and standby power systems
- Ability to read and produce riser diagrams, schematics, and asbuilt drawings; competent with fire alarm software and reporting tools
- Sensitivity testing and calibration experience, plus knowledge of notification appliance placement and ADA compliance
- Experience integrating fire alarm systems with sprinkler flow switches, suppression systems, and emergency power/generator interfaces
- NICET certification (or working toward NICET) preferred but not required
- Valid drivers license, clean driving record, and ability to pass background and drug screening where applicable
- Physically able to climb ladders, lift equipment, work at heights, and work in confined spaces when necessary
- Strong communication skills, attention to detail, ability to work independently and as part of a team, and willingness to participate in oncall rotation and overtime as needed
