The Project Engineer supports commercial construction operations and works closely with Project Managers to deliver projects on time and within budget. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented and organized professional who wants to grow a career in project management within a fast-paced construction environment. The Project Engineer coordinates project documentation, supports project execution, and helps ensure quality, cost control, and client satisfaction throughout the life of each project.
Responsibilities
- Support Project Managers in the planning, coordination, and execution of commercial construction projects.
- Manage and maintain project documentation, including plans, specifications, RFIs, submittals, and closeout materials.
- Assist with project scheduling, track progress, and coordinate activities across project teams.
- Support cost tracking, change orders, and project reporting to help maintain budget and financial control.
- Review project plans and specifications to ensure alignment with project scope, schedule, and budget.
- Coordinate with estimating, operations, vendors, subcontractors, and internal teams to keep projects moving smoothly.
- Prepare project status updates and assist with ongoing project analysis and reporting.
- Complete site walks to support project coordination, verify scope alignment, and identify field-level considerations throughout the project lifecycle.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and support the overall success of the project team.
Essential Skills
- Experience supporting construction projects in a project engineering or project management role.
- Hands-on experience in commercial construction or construction management environments.
- Ability to manage and maintain construction documentation, including RFIs, submittals, and change orders.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong analytical skills to support project tracking, cost control, and reporting.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and technical documents.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to quality and accuracy in project documentation and coordination.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field preferred.
- Experience as a construction project engineer or in a similar project coordination role.
- Familiarity with RFIs, change orders, and construction project documentation processes.
- Experience with scheduling software is a plus.
- Interest in long-term career growth within commercial construction.
- Ability to contribute ideas for continuous improvement and process enhancement.
Work Environment
The role is primarily office-based with periodic visits to active construction sites. You will work closely with Project Managers, estimators, operations teams, vendors, and subcontractors in a collaborative, fast-paced commercial construction environment. Site visits will involve observing field conditions, verifying scope alignment, and supporting coordination between office and field teams. The position offers exposure to multiple projects and long-term growth opportunities, with a steady pipeline of work and a strong emphasis on teamwork, professional development, and project success.

This is a Contract position based out of Knoxville, TN.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $29.00 - $31.25/hr.
