Title: Groundskeeper

Department/Division: Facilities

Status: Full-Time

Supervisors: Lead Groundskeeper / Facilities Manager

Subordinates: None

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Lead Groundskeeper and the Facilities Manager, the groundskeeper will maintain the Sports Complex property using hand tools, power tools and/or various landscaping equipment. The worker will typically perform a variety of tasks on a daily basis based on the needs of each area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate a variety of mowers to maintain athletic fields and lawns; inspect tractor and mower for safe and proper operation; maintain equipment as needed, replacing fuel, fluids, and oil
  • Mow, edge, trim and rake fields; operate riding mowers, push mowers, light-duty vehicles, blowers, sweepers, trimmers, edger, and weed eaters
  • Rake, sweep, blow and pick up clippings, paper, and trash from athletic fields
  • Prepare the fields which will include dragging the infield, chalking the field according to specified dimensions, watering infield, and setting bases
  • Field maintenance will include filling infield holes, adding clay to the infield when necessary and inspecting the ball fields for proper safety
  • Utilize independent judgment in performing grounds maintenance activities
  • Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing and removing thatch, and trimming and edging around flower beds, walks, and walls
  • Performs other related duties as directed by the Lead Groundskeeper and the Facilities Manager

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, CERTIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES:



  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, and equipment used to complete the necessary tasks
  • Knowledge of the operation and care of equipment, tools, and supplies used relating to the job
  • Knowledge of materials and products used in grounds keeping work
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures in the operation of hand and power tools
  • Knowledge and skills in preparing softball and baseball fields
  • Knowledge of basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking, and weeding
  • Ability to work harmoniously and cooperatively with other employees and the public
  • Ability to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do each task.
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical work with prolonged standing and walking for extended periods of time, walking over rough or uneven surfaces, stretching, bending, and pushing, stooping, climbing, crouching, crawling, moving, lifting, and carrying loads weighing between 50-95 pounds.



WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Exposure to inclement weather conditions while performing work including exposure to wet and/or humid conditions
  • Work is performed outdoors while exposed to fumes, odors, dust, dirt, rain, heat, cold, chemicals, and machinery with moving parts
  • The noise level in the work environment is loud when operating equipment



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Five years' experience in grounds maintenance and related equipment, irrigation systems and use of hand tools preferred.
  • Must acknowledge and agree to maintain a Drug-Free workplace (including marijuana) as a condition of employment with the Pala Band of Mission Indians. Must pass pre-employment and random drug testing during employment.
  • Must successfully pass a Fingerprint-based background check of potential employees, volunteers, and contractors pursuant to Public Law 101-630 - Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act.
