Job Title: Quality Technician

Job Description

This entry-level Quality Technician position focuses on performing standard germination tests on agricultural seeds in a fast-paced laboratory environment. You will prepare and evaluate seed samples, record results using a tablet, and support overall quality control and quality assurance activities. The role involves repetitive tasks, extended periods of sitting and standing, and requires strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Perform standard germination tests on seed types including corn, wheat, soybean, and sorghum.
  • Prepare seed samples by rolling dozens of seeds on paper towels and wax paper and placing them into germination equipment.
  • Evaluate the quality of seedlings by visually assessing and classifying them as live, dead, or abnormal.
  • Accurately enter test findings and observations into a tablet or computer system in a timely manner.
  • Follow established laboratory techniques and operate planting machines and related equipment after training.
  • Maintain high levels of accuracy, speed, and consistency while performing repetitive tasks.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively in group settings to complete daily testing assignments.
  • Adhere to performance metrics related to accuracy, performance, attendance, and speed as part of ongoing evaluation.
  • Participate in approximately 15 hours of training focused on planting techniques and seedling evaluation.
  • Follow all laboratory safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment at all times.
  • Handle, move, and lift materials and equipment weighing up to 30 pounds as needed.
  • Support overtime and weekend work when required to meet operational needs.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to perform detailed visual inspection and evaluation of seed quality.
  • Strong attention to detail with a consistent record of accuracy and transactional excellence.
  • Comfort with repetitive tasks and the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of 2–4 hours at a time.
  • Capability to use a tablet and computer for data entry and documentation.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds safely and repeatedly as needed.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime and weekends when necessary.
  • Comfort working in a laboratory environment with multiple team members.
  • No prior experience required; willingness to learn and follow detailed procedures.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Interest in quality control, quality assurance, or inspection work.
  • Experience with visual inspection or quality checks in a lab, production, or manufacturing environment is beneficial.
  • Comfort performing quality checks on corn seeds and other agricultural seeds.
  • Ability to work both independently on solo tasks and collaboratively within a team.
  • Openness to learning how to operate planting machines and germination equipment.
  • Reliability and strong attendance to support consistent lab operations.

Work Environment

The position is based in a busy laboratory environment with approximately 30–50 workers. You will alternate between sitting and standing, often for 2–4 hours at a time, and perform repetitive motions throughout the shift. The schedule runs on a day shift through October, typically targeting 8-hour days, with the possibility of working up to 10-hour days between July and December depending on workload. Overtime and weekend work may be required. The role involves handling seed samples, using germinators and planting machines, and entering data on tablets and computers. Safety is a priority, and specific attire and protective equipment are required: steel-toe, over-the-ankle work boots (provided by the worker), and provided hi-visibility hard hat, general-purpose gloves, hi-visibility safety vest, and safety eyewear. Long pants made of durable material, such as jeans, and a shirt with sleeves that at least cover the shoulders are required, with no loose clothing allowed to maintain a safe working environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Constantine, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
