Johnston Design Group · Greenville, SC · In studio or hybrid; remote considered for experienced candidates · Full time
Johnston Design Group is a boutique architecture firm in Greenville, South Carolina, and a leader in restorative design: buildings that enhance the well-being of their occupants, achieve economy through conservation, and honor the natural resources of every site. We design in different shades of green — practical, economically sound sustainability, not dogma.
The role
As Project Architect, you'll lead the day-to-day architecture on several projects at once, guiding the design phases and producing clear, coordinated construction documents. You'll work closely with fellow architects, our interior design studio, consultants, general contractors, and owners — keeping everyone informed and the design intent intact.
What you'll do

— Facilitate design-phase meetings, reviews, and owner presentations
— Produce complete, coordinated, buildable construction documents
— Coordinate structural, MEP, civil, and landscape consultants
— Partner with GCs and owners on pricing, constructability, and value analysis
— Lead code and zoning research, design review submissions, and permitting
— Support construction-phase RFIs, submittals, and site visits
Required
— 5+ years of professional experience in architecture
— Urban mixed-use and multifamily experience, including construction documents
— Strong knowledge of codes, accessibility, and Fair Housing requirements
— Commitment to sustainable, restorative design with a practical, business-minded approach
— Exceptional organization and collaboration skills
— Proficiency in Revit
— Availability Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Eastern
Preferred
— Licensed architect, or actively pursuing licensure
— Master of Architecture
— LEED AP BD+C or similar credential
— Custom residential and construction administration experience
Work arrangement
Greenville studio or hybrid. Fully remote — even as a digital nomad — is considered for experienced, self-directed candidates with a record of remote collaboration, core-hours availability, and occasional travel to Greenville and project sites.
Compensation
Salary: based on experience and qualifications. Benefits include flex-time, matching IRA contribution, HSA contribution, [health coverage], and professional development and licensure support.
