About the Opportunity
The Maintenance Generalist is responsible for assisting with the upkeep and maintenance of the grounds and facilities of the Virginia Home for Boys & Girls as directed by the Facilities Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct and perform all tasks in a professional and considerate manner.
- Be a positive role model to the youth that we serve.
- Performs routine and preventive maintenance on facility buildings, grounds, and equipment as directed by the Facilities Manager, including cleaning, restoring, repairing, or replacing broken/inoperative components and parts.
- Maintains a safe working environment by complying with all safety and procedural standards, rules, and regulations (OSHA).
- Performs minor carpentry, painting, drywall repairs of buildings as needed.
- Performs routine plumbing work such as unstopping toilets and drains, replacing faucets, valves, and washers, and repairing leaks.
- Performs minor electrical work such as replacing light bulbs, outlets, switches, etc.
- Maintains building accessibility and appearance by picking up trash; removing ice and snow from walkways and parking lots; maintaining surrounding landscape.
- Maintains inventory as directed by the Facilities Manager by making routine pick-ups/purchases at local stores using VHBG credit card.
- Performs minor repairs and adjustments to a variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Performs other related work as assigned by supervisor.
- Painting duties as required.
- Power washing buildings.
- On call as directed by Facilities manager.
Job Specifications (KSA’S):
Read and interpreting documentation such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Must be prepared to help and learn form our Senior Maintenance Generalist.
- Identify problems and communicate problems.
- Perform job in accordance with the organization's policies & procedures.
- Equipment Maintenance - Performing routine maintenance on vehicles, equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
- Active Listening - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate.
- Equipment Selection - Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
- Basic computer skills required.
Physical/Mental Requirements:
- Must be able to work in all kinds of weather
- Must have a passion to make our campus the best environment it can be,for our youth and staff.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time, able to lift, climb, balance, stoop, crawl, crouch, reach, handle, push and pull, and be able to move objects weighing up to 80lbs.
- Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
- Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Problem Sensitivity - The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
- Information Ordering - The ability to arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules (e.g., patterns of numbers, letters, words, pictures, mathematical operations).
- Manual Dexterity - The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
- Multi limb Coordination - The ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting, standing, or lying down. It does not involve performing the activities while the whole body is in motion.
- Near Vision - The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
Experience and Education:
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required; at least 2 years or more prior grounds and/or facility experience required; minor HVAC repair skills preferred
In addition, the candidate must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License with driving record in good standing, must be able to successfully clear background checks associated with job, and must successfully complete in-house training.
