Responsibilities

The Project Estimator is responsible for calculating the total costs associated with a project using their knowledge of pricing, labor requirements, and materials to provide accurate estimates to customers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Study and analyze blueprints, schematics, and other project documentation to prepare time, cost, materials, and labor estimates.
  • Consult with clients, vendors, personnel in other departments, or construction workers to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues.
  • Prepare estimates for use in selecting vendors or subcontractors.
  • Conduct special studies to develop and establish standard hour and related cost data or to effect cost reduction.
  • Review material and labor requirements to decide whether it is more cost-effective to produce or purchase components.
  • Prepare cost and expenditure statements and other necessary documentation at regular intervals for the duration of the project.
  • Assess cost effectiveness of products, projects, or services, tracking actual costs relative to bids as the project develops.
  • Set up cost monitoring and reporting systems and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain tendering processes and conduct negotiations.

Qualifications

Education / Training

  • Education and/or experience equivalent to a high school diploma
  • 5+ years of experience in Specialty-trades role, such as Construction Estimation, Jobsite Coordination, Project Management, etc.

Work Experience / Skills

  • Mechanical construction experience in a specialty trade (HVAC, Refrigeration, Energy Management/Controls) equivalent to a Journeyman (4+ years) field is a plus.
  • Familiar with both basic and advanced mechanical system design practices.
  • Able to manage multiple assignments, setting and balancing competing priorities with strong organizational skills and multi-tasking capability.
  • Able to solve problems, apply good judgement and make decisions that have significant impact on the team’s credibility, operations, and service.
  • Able to effectively use typical business tools including E-Mail, Word, Excel, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, etc.
  • Familiar with automated, on-screen takeoff, estimating software, or drafting software, (i.e. PlanSwift, Quickpen, QuoteSoft, FastEst, AutoCAD, Revit).
  • Ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget, contributing to the overall success of the organization.
  • Excellent verbal, nonverbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong customer service skills, including an ability to proactively address customer issues and concerns and ability to forge strong working relationships with customers and coworkers.
