Job Title: Vehicle Test Technician
Job Description
The Vehicle Test Technician supports the development and validation of advanced electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles by managing test vehicles, performing routine maintenance, installing test instrumentation, and assisting with on-road and proving ground testing. This role works closely with engineers to ensure test vehicles are safe, reliable, and properly configured for a wide range of test activities in both standard and extreme environments.
Responsibilities
- Support day-to-day test vehicle fleet management, ensuring all vehicles are available, safe, and ready for scheduled test activities.
- Perform routine maintenance on EV, HEV, PHEV, and FCEV vehicles in accordance with established procedures and test requirements.
- Collaborate with engineers to replace, upgrade, and update test vehicle hardware and software as needed to support ongoing development programs.
- Install a variety of sensors and instrumentation, including high voltage probes, current sensors, thermocouples, and data acquisition systems on test vehicles.
- Set up and verify data acquisition systems to ensure accurate measurement and recording of vehicle performance parameters.
- Conduct basic performance testing and measurements for proving ground and on-road test activities, including tests that involve towing.
- Assist in collecting, reviewing, and performing basic analysis of test data to support engineering evaluations and reports.
- Execute test activities in extreme environmental conditions, including very cold, very hot, and high-elevation locations, following safety and test protocols.
- Maintain accurate records of all team inventory, including tools, equipment, instrumentation, and consumables.
- Track and coordinate equipment calibration and maintenance to ensure all test and measurement tools remain in proper working order.
- Organize the shop area to maintain a clean, safe, and efficient workspace for vehicle preparation and testing.
- Identify, organize, purchase, and update shop tools, consumables, and parts as needed to support ongoing test operations.
- Follow all safety procedures and guidelines when working with high-voltage systems, test vehicles, and shop equipment.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on experience with automotive maintenance, including inspection, service, and repair of vehicles.
- Ability to perform routine maintenance on EV, HEV, PHEV, and FCEV vehicles following established procedures.
- Experience working with high-voltage systems and components in an automotive or similar environment.
- Proficiency in installing sensors and instrumentation such as high voltage probes, current sensors, thermocouples, and data acquisition systems.
- Ability to conduct basic performance testing and measurements for on-road and proving ground test activities.
- Basic skills in data collection, measurement, and analysis to support engineering evaluations.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records of inventory, equipment calibration, and maintenance.
- Ability to organize, maintain, and manage tools, consumables, and parts in a workshop or test environment.
- Capability and willingness to work in extreme environmental conditions, including very cold, very hot, and high-elevation locations.
- Effective collaboration skills to work closely with engineers and other team members on test vehicle preparation and testing.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience supporting test vehicle fleet operations or similar automotive test environments.
- Familiarity with software and hardware updates on modern vehicles, particularly EV, HEV, PHEV, and FCEV platforms.
- Comfort working around towing operations and vehicle testing that involves trailers or additional loads.
- Attention to detail in documenting test setups, instrumentation configurations, and maintenance activities.
- Strong commitment to safety practices, especially when working with high-voltage systems and test equipment.
Work Environment
The Vehicle Test Technician works primarily in a workshop and test facility environment, with regular activities conducted on proving grounds and public roads. The role involves frequent hands-on work with EV, HEV, PHEV, and FCEV test vehicles, including hardware and software updates, sensor and instrumentation installation, and vehicle maintenance. The technician uses a variety of shop tools, measurement devices, and data acquisition systems, and helps ensure all equipment is properly calibrated and maintained. The position requires working in a structured yet dynamic setting, where test priorities can change and flexibility is important. Test activities may occur in extreme environmental conditions, including very cold, very hot, and high-elevation locations, and the technician must be prepared to work safely and effectively in these conditions while adhering to all safety procedures and guidelines.

This is a Contract position based out of Chino, CA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $33.00/hr.
