Congregation Bnai Israel is seeking a dedicated and reliable Custodian & Maintenance Technician to maintain a clean, safe, and well-functioning environment for our congregants, staff, and visitors.

Position Summary

The Custodian & Maintenance Technician performs routine cleaning, essential facility upkeep, and basic groundskeeping. This role ensures our building, systems, and property are clean, operational, and well-kept for daily operations, religious services, educational programs, and community events.

Schedule Requirements

  • Weekend Shifts: Must be available and willing to work weekends to support services and regular programming.
  • Event Flexibility: Flexibility to work varied hours, evenings, or holidays to accommodate special community events, lifecycle celebrations, and dinners.

Key Responsibilities

Facility Maintenance & Repairs

  • Basic Repairs: Perform minor maintenance tasks including replacing lightbulbs/ballasts, minor plumbing fixes (clogs, leaks), and basic hardware repairs.
  • Tool Operation: Safely and effectively operate a variety of hand and power tools for maintenance and assembly projects.
  • Troubleshooting: Routinely inspect the facility to identify maintenance needs, handling minor issues directly and reporting major issues to management.

Facility Cleaning & Janitorial

  • Daily Cleaning: Vacuum carpets, sweep and mop hard floors, clean and restock restrooms, and empty all trash and recycling receptacles.
  • Surface Care: Dust furniture, wipe down counters and doorknobs, and clean glass doors and windows as needed.

Event & Lunch Support

  • Setup and Teardown: Arrange tables and chairs for weekly kiddush lunches, meetings, religious school classes, and special community events.
  • Post-Event Cleanup: Clean dining areas, wash or clear surfaces, sweep/mop floors, and take out event-related trash promptly following gatherings.

Grounds & Exterior Care

  • Yard Maintenance: Sweep walkways, clear leaves, and perform basic weeding or outdoor upkeep around the synagogue perimeter.
  • Parking Lot: Keep the parking lot and entryways clear of litter, debris, and seasonal hazards (such as snow/ice or fallen branches).

Qualifications & Skills

  • Maintenance Experience: Demonstrated experience in basic building maintenance, hand/power tool usage, and general janitorial work.
  • Technical Skills: Ability to troubleshoot and repair minor electrical, plumbing, and structural issues.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, bend, lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and perform active physical labor.
  • Reliability: Dependable, punctual, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Respectful Demeanor: Understanding of or respect for a house of worship environment and its diverse community members.
