The Role
This is a full-time, on-site Porter role supporting a residential property in Harlem, operated by a well-established affordable housing nonprofit active across New York City. The organization has a long track record of community-centered property management, and the people who work in their buildings are a direct extension of that mission.
This is a hands-on, physical role. The Porter is responsible for keeping the building clean, safe, and running day to day. This is not a supervisory or administrative position, and it is not a stepping stone to something else unless you want it to be. What matters here is showing up, doing the work well, and taking pride in the space you maintain.
What This Role Is, and Is Not
This role is:
- A full-time, on-site position in a occupied residential building in Harlem
- Focused on cleaning, maintenance, and building upkeep as primary daily work
- A role where consistency, reliability, and attention to detail matter most
- Part of a small, close-knit property team serving residents directly
This role is NOT:
- Remote or hybrid in any capacity
- A maintenance technician or handyman role (repairs are handled separately)
- A good fit if you prefer variety over routine
- A management or lead position
Required Experience & Traits
- Prior experience as a Porter, Custodian, or Building Cleaner, residential or commercial
- Comfort working independently with minimal supervision
- Physical ability to perform sustained manual labor, including lifting, mopping, sweeping, and trash removal
- Reliable and punctual, this building and its residents count on you being there
- Respectful and professional when interacting with residents and building staff
- Familiarity with basic cleaning equipment and supplies
- A degree is not required, relevant experience and dependability are what matter here
Key Responsibilities
Daily Cleaning & Common Areas
- Sweep, mop, and maintain cleanliness of hallways, lobbies, stairwells, and common spaces
- Remove trash and recycling from collection points and prepare for pickup on scheduled days
Building Exterior & Grounds
- Keep the building entrance, sidewalk, and exterior areas clean and clear
- Manage snow removal and salting as needed during winter months
Resident-Facing Upkeep
- Respond to day-to-day cleanliness needs reported by residents or property management
- Maintain a visible, professional presence that reflects well on the building and its management
Supplies & Equipment
- Monitor cleaning supply inventory and flag when restocking is needed
- Properly operate and maintain cleaning equipment to avoid damage or downtime
Compensation
- Hourly rate: $20.00 to $22.00, depending on experience
