Security/Corrections Officer – 3rd Shift
Location: St. Louis County, Missouri
Shift: 3rd Shift / Overnight
Employment Type: Contract
Position Summary
The Security/Corrections Officer will provide security, safety, and custodial support within a correctional or secure facility in St. Louis County. Officers will augment existing 3rd shift operations by maintaining order, monitoring residents/inmates, enforcing facility policies and procedures, and supporting the safe and secure operation of the facility.
Officers are expected to maintain a professional presence, exercise sound judgment, and respond appropriately to security incidents, emergencies, and other situations requiring immediate attention.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain security and order throughout assigned facility areas.
- Monitor inmate/resident activities, movement, housing units, entrances, exits, and other designated areas.
- Conduct security checks, inspections, counts, and routine patrols as assigned.
- Enforce facility rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Control access to restricted areas and verify authorized personnel, visitors, and contractors.
- Monitor surveillance systems, alarms, communications, and other security equipment.
- Escort inmates/residents to designated areas as required.
- Respond to disturbances, medical emergencies, alarms, security breaches, and other incidents.
- Use appropriate de-escalation techniques to address conflicts and maintain a safe environment.
- Prepare accurate incident reports, shift logs, and other required documentation.
- Maintain constant awareness of potential safety and security risks.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, correctional staff, law enforcement, medical personnel, and other facility personnel.
- Conduct searches of individuals, rooms, property, and designated areas in accordance with facility procedures.
- Assist with emergency response procedures, evacuations, lockdowns, and other contingency operations.
- Safeguard facility property, equipment, keys, access credentials, and other controlled items.
- Perform other security and corrections-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Prior experience in corrections, security, law enforcement, military, or a related field preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years of age or meet applicable facility requirements.
- Ability to pass required background screening and facility security clearance.
- Ability to successfully complete required training.
- Ability to work overnight/3rd shift, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
- Strong communication, observation, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful or potentially confrontational situations.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established policies/procedures.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to conduct routine patrols and security checks.
- Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
- Ability to perform duties requiring physical restraint or intervention when authorized and properly trained.
- Ability to work in a correctional/secure facility environment.
- Ability to meet applicable facility and client physical requirements.
Work Environment
This position operates primarily during the 3rd shift/overnight hours in a secure correctional environment. Officers may work indoors and outdoors and may encounter individuals who are disruptive, confrontational, or experiencing emotional distress. Officers must maintain professionalism, situational awareness, and adherence to all facility safety and security protocols.
