The Assistant Project Manager develops under senior leadership to support electrical distribution projects, with growing responsibility for estimating, scheduling, procurement, and overall project management. This entry-level role offers the opportunity to learn the utility distribution business from the ground up, gain strong exposure to project financials, and progress into direct customer-facing responsibilities within the first few months.
Responsibilities
- Support the planning and execution of electrical distribution projects, including estimating, scheduling, procurement, and overall project coordination.
- Assist in developing and maintaining project schedules to ensure work progresses according to plan and deadlines are met.
- Contribute to project budgeting and cost analysis, tracking financial performance and supporting accurate financial reporting.
- Work extensively with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, to manage data, prepare reports, analyze costs, and support project financial tracking.
- Shadow utility distribution crews to learn day-to-day operations, field processes, and the practical aspects of the distribution business.
- Collaborate with project teams to ensure materials, equipment, and resources are procured and available in alignment with project schedules.
- Support communication with customers and stakeholders, taking on customer-facing responsibilities once adequately trained.
- Assist senior leadership with documentation, status updates, and reporting on project progress, schedules, and financial performance.
- Participate in continuous learning and development activities to grow into a fully independent project management role.
- Contribute to a safe, organized, and efficient work environment both in the office and when shadowing field crews.
Essential Skills
- Foundational knowledge of project management principles, particularly in construction or utility distribution environments.
- Understanding of construction management practices, including scheduling, budgeting, and cost analysis.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, with advanced skills in Excel for data management and financial analysis.
- Ability to work with project financial data, including budgeting, cost tracking, and financial reporting.
- Interest in and ability to learn utility distribution operations through both office work and field shadowing.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with project teams and interacting with customers once trained.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail in managing schedules, documentation, and financial information.
- Ability to work independently under guidance from senior leadership and take initiative in learning and development.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management is strongly preferred; recent graduates are highly encouraged to apply.
- Any prior experience with project financial reporting or cost analysis is a plus.
- Exposure to construction, utility distribution, or related industries is beneficial.
- Comfort with learning new systems and processes in a growing market environment.
- Interest in building a long-term career in project management within the utility and construction sectors.
Work Environment
The role begins as a work-from-home position and transitions to a newly acquired office space in the Industriplex area in Baton Rouge once the office build-out is complete. The local operation is in a growth phase, with plans to hire dozens of new team members over the next few months and expand from a primarily field-based workforce to a larger combined field and office presence. The Assistant Project Manager periodically shadows distribution crews in the field to gain a thorough understanding of the business and day-to-day operations. This is a salaried position that includes vacation and holiday benefits, and access to a company vehicle is available at the end of the assignment. This is a Contract position based out of Fort Worth, TX.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $24.04 - $36.06/hr.
