The Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency is seeking a skilled Communications Technician to support and maintain the Rutherford County public safety radio communications system. This position is responsible for programming, troubleshooting, and repairing equipment used by emergency responders and county agencies. The technician also manages communications equipment inventory, supports emergency operations, and participates in an on-call rotation to help ensure reliable communications when they matter most.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain portable, mobile, console, and fixed radio equipment
  • Support countywide public safety communications systems, including firmware and software updates
  • Configure subscriber radios and manage talk groups and approved templates
  • Maintain accountability and security of radio encryption keys
  • Monitor diagnostics and proactively address equipment performance issues
  • Manage communications inventory, asset tracking, issuance, recovery, and disposal
  • Assist with communications infrastructure maintenance and tower site inspections
  • Ensure compliance with FCC and other applicable regulations
  • Participate in emergency response, disaster operations, drills, and exercises
  • Prepare reports and maintain records related to communications and emergency management activities
  • Serve in an established 24-hour on-call rotation schedule

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two (2) or more years of experience working with radio communications systems, electronics, or related technical equipment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical training or an associate degree in electronics, telecommunications, or a related field
  • Experience supporting public safety radio systems, including P25 and conventional networks
  • Experience with radio fleet management and asset control
  • Communications Technician (COMT) qualification
  • FEMA coursework and emergency management training
  • CPR certification
  • Valid Tennessee driver's license
