Job Description

MTLI Group is a North American turnkey industrial contractor and systems integrator with a 44-year history and more than 15,000 completed projects. We design, supply, install and maintain material handling systems across all Canadian provinces and all 50 U.S. states, from our headquarters in Markham, Ontario. Our divisions cover racking and automation, electrical, relocations and decommissioning, construction, installation and maintenance, and turnkey services. We serve enterprise distribution, manufacturing and 3PL clients, and we're scaling fast.

\n

\n

The Senior Solutions Engineer owns the design of our material handling equipment (MHE) and engineered solutions, from first concept through to install-ready drawings. You'll take a client's operational problem, whether it's storage density, throughput, labour cost or growth, and turn it into a designed, costed, buildable system.

\n

This is a hands-on role. You'll run full CAD design yourself, including layouts, elevations, details, permit packages and install drawings. You'll work with sales on the front end and hand clean, complete packages to operations on the back end. You'll also set the design standards the rest of the company builds to.

\n

Systems in scope include selective, pallet flow, push-back, drive-in and carton flow racking, cantilever, mezzanines and pick modules, conveyor and sortation, wire guidance and VNA layouts, guarding and safety systems, and integrated automation concepts.

Key responsibilitiesSolution design and engineering\n

    \n
  • Lead technical discovery with clients: site visits, SKU and order profiles, inventory data, throughput targets and growth plans.
  • \n

  • Develop design concepts and alternatives, and recommend the best-fit solution on cost, density, throughput and future flexibility.
  • \n

  • Run capacity, throughput and storage-density analysis to back up every recommendation with numbers.
  • \n

  • Select equipment and components across our manufacturer partners, staying vendor-agnostic.
  • \n

  • Design within RMI/ANSI MH16.1, CSA, building, fire and seismic code requirements, and flag code, sprinkler and permit issues early.
  • \n

Full CAD design and drawing production\n

    \n
  • Produce complete CAD packages in AutoCAD, from concept through to issued-for-construction.
  • \n

  • Prepare warehouse layouts, plan views, elevations, sections, details and 3D views as each project needs.
  • \n

  • Produce rack, mezzanine and conveyor drawings: frame and beam configurations, load ratings, anchor and baseplate details, flue spaces, aisle widths and clearances.
  • \n

  • Prepare permit drawing packages, load signage and plaque information, and the documents needed for engineering review.
  • \n

  • Produce install drawings, bills of material and cut lists that field crews can build from without guesswork.
  • \n

  • Survey and verify existing conditions, including column grids, slab, sprinklers, lighting, doors and obstructions, and build accurate base drawings from site data and client files.
  • \n

  • Revise drawings through design reviews, change orders and as-built updates, under controlled revision management.
  • \n

Sales support and estimating\n

    \n
  • Partner with sales and key account directors on engineered and automation opportunities from first meeting to close.
  • \n

  • Produce proposal drawings, technical scopes and the bill of materials that drives estimating.
  • \n

  • Present designs to clients, answer technical questions and defend the recommendation.
  • \n

  • Review client RFPs and specs, and identify gaps, risks, exclusions and value-engineering options.
  • \n

Engineering coordination and permitting\n

    \n
  • Coordinate with third-party stamping engineers (P.Eng/PE) by jurisdiction on structural calcs, seismic, slab and anchor checks.
  • \n

  • Prepare and manage permit submissions with the authority having jurisdiction, and respond to reviewer comments.
  • \n

  • Work with manufacturer engineering teams on rack, conveyor and automation submittals.
  • \n

Handover and project support\n

    \n
  • Hand off complete, locked packages to operations: drawings, BOM, scope, sequencing notes and site constraints.
  • \n

  • Support project managers and field crews with RFIs, site questions and design changes during install.
  • \n

  • Review completed work against design intent when needed, and capture lessons learned in standards.
  • \n

Standards and continuous improvement\n

    \n
  • Build and maintain MTLI's design standards: drawing templates, title blocks, layer standards, block and component libraries, and design checklists.
  • \n

  • Run design QA so errors are caught before they turn into change orders or field rework.
  • \n

  • Help hire, train and mentor future CAD designers and solutions engineers as the team grows.
  • \n

QualificationsRequired\n

    \n
  • 7+ years designing material handling systems at an integrator, rack or conveyor manufacturer, or MHE dealer.
  • \n

  • Expert-level AutoCAD, with a track record of producing complete layout, permit and install drawing packages on your own.
  • \n

  • Strong working knowledge of racking systems, mezzanines and conveyor, and of RMI/ANSI MH16.1, CSA and fire code requirements.
  • \n

  • Working knowledge of both structural and mechanical design, enough to design confidently and review stamping engineers' work.
  • \n

  • Ability to analyse SKU, order and inventory data to size and justify a design.
  • \n

  • Comfortable in front of clients, presenting designs and handling technical pushback.
  • \n

  • Degree or diploma in mechanical, structural, civil or industrial engineering, or engineering technology.
  • \n

  • Willing to travel to client sites across Canada and the U.S.
  • \n

Preferred\n

    \n
  • P.Eng (Ontario) or EIT working toward licensure.
  • \n

  • Experience with Revit, Inventor or SolidWorks, and 3D layout or BIM.
  • \n

  • Throughput or simulation tools (for example AutoMod, FlexSim or Excel-based models).
  • \n

  • Exposure to automation: AS/RS, AMRs, shuttles, sortation, and wire-guided or VNA systems.
  • \n

  • Experience with seismic design and permit submissions in multiple jurisdictions.
  • \n
