Job Description
The Maintenance Technician will perform comprehensive mechanical, electrical, and controls maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair across a fast-paced manufacturing facility. This role supports a variety of automated production equipment, including hydraulic thermoforming presses, ovens, robotic waterjets, three-phase motors, and Allen-Bradley and Siemens PLCs and HMIs. The position involves plugging into equipment with a laptop to diagnose and adjust programs and drives, ensuring reliable operation of equipment used to produce interior sound-deadening components for the automotive industry.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance (PM) on manufacturing-related equipment to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
- Safely troubleshoot live electrical panels and identify root causes of electrical issues.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic problems on automated machinery.
- Monitor, repair, and adjust hydraulic thermoforming presses, ovens, robotic waterjets, and three-phase motors to maintain optimal performance.
- Connect to control systems with a laptop to troubleshoot programs and variable frequency drives.
- Edit and modify control programs on programmable devices such as Allen-Bradley SLC-500, ControlLogix, PanelView, and PanelView Plus, as needed for equipment reliability and process improvements.
- Participate in problem-solving groups and continuous improvement and lean manufacturing activities to enhance safety, quality, and productivity.
- Support maintenance department efforts to achieve key performance measures and reliability targets.
- Continuously learn and support various manufacturing processes, including thermal forming, adhesive application, molding, isocyanate foam, high-pressure water cutting, and assembly operations.
- Operate powered industrial trucks, aerial lifts, and cranes safely to perform maintenance tasks throughout the facility.
- Read and interpret machine drawings, blueprints, electrical schematics, and control diagrams to plan and execute repairs and installations.
- Install, repair, and maintain wiring, conduit, and related electrical components in accordance with applicable codes and safety standards.
- Perform basic welding, fabrication, and use of machining tools and powered hand tools to repair or modify equipment components.
- Assist with installation, startup, and service of new or upgraded machinery and equipment.
- Collaborate with production and engineering teams to minimize downtime and support efficient changeovers and process improvements.
- Document maintenance activities, repairs, and modifications to support a Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) approach where applicable.
Essential Skills
- At least 3+ years of experience working in a maintenance department within a manufacturing environment.
- At least 3+ years of experience working with and maintaining automated machinery.
- At least 1+ year of hands-on electrical troubleshooting experience.
- Strong mechanical with the ability to diagnose and repair mechanical systems, including hydraulics and pneumatics.
- Proficiency in industrial electrical maintenance, including working with three-phase power and control circuits.
- Ability to safely troubleshoot live electrical panels and follow strict safety procedures.
- Experience with PLC troubleshooting on industrial equipment (Allen-Bradley and Siemens platforms).
- Ability to read and interpret machine drawings, blueprints, electrical schematics, and control diagrams.
- Ability to use basic machining tools, powered hand tools, and other maintenance-related equipment.
- Experience with repair, troubleshooting, and installation of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Ability and willingness to work overtime as needed and to support any production shift.
- Experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Automotive manufacturing is a plus.
- Experience with robotic systems and robotic controls (such as Fanuc, Motoman, or ABB) is a plus.
- Experience working with a Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) system is a plus.
- Familiarity with smart cameras such as Keyence, Cognex, or similar systems is a plus.
- Experience with conduit installation and bending, wiring, and field service work is beneficial.
- Ability to read and work from electrical and electronic schematics for PLC control and automation systems.
- Basic welding and fabrication skills are an advantage.
- An electrical journeyman card is a plus.

Work Environment
This role is based in a large, approximately 300,000-square-foot manufacturing facility that produces interior sound-deadening materials for the automotive industry. The environment is fast-paced and highly deadline-driven, reflecting the demands of automotive production and support for multiple major automotive manufacturers and tiered suppliers. The facility operates extended hours, with a typical workweek currently around 50 hours, and regular Saturday work expected until staffing levels are fully optimized; some Sundays may also be required, with double-time pay offered on Sundays. Available shifts include first shift (approximately 7:00 AM 3:00 PM, MondayFriday), second shift (approximately 3:00 PM 11:00 PM, MondayFriday, with a shift premium), and third shift (approximately 11:00 PM 7:00 AM, Sunday night through Friday morning, with a shift premium). The role requires frequent work on and around automated machinery, hydraulic presses, ovens, robotic waterjets, three-phase motors, PLCs, HMIs, and related industrial control systems. Technicians regularly use powered industrial trucks, aerial lifts, cranes, machining tools, powered hand tools, and test equipment. The setting is a typical industrial plant environment where appropriate work attire and personal protective equipment are required to ensure safety while working around active production lines and heavy equipment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Battle Creek, MI.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $34.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
