Sr. DevOps Manager -- Cloud Infrastructure -- Forward Deployed
Job Description
Job Description
Position Type: Forward-Deployed Engineer (FDE) | Consultant
Location: On-site 3 days/week; 2 days remote
Start Date: On or about August 25, 2026
Engagement Duration: 3-month initial term
Compensation: $160k–$180k annually (full-time)
Overview
Automated Industries is placing a Sr. DevOps Manager with a New York–based client to take ownership of their cloud infrastructure across AWS and GCP.
This is a senior infrastructure seat at the company. You'll own the estate outright — the architecture, the code that defines it, the pipelines that ship to it, and the standards everyone else builds against. You'll also lead a team of three offshore DevOps engineers, setting their technical direction and growing their capability while the client's product and AI/ML workloads scale on top of what you build.
It's a hands-on management role. You'll spend real time in Terraform and in the cluster, and real time in code review, planning, and mentoring. If you want to be the person who decides how infrastructure works at a company and then goes and builds it, this is that job.
What You'll Own
The cloud estate. Production infrastructure across AWS and GCP, defined entirely in code. You'll set the Terraform module standard, the state and workspace strategy, and the review process the whole organization works within. You'll own cloud spend — visibility, attribution, and the decisions that bring it down.
The team. Three offshore DevOps engineers, dotted-line to you. You'll set their priorities, review their work, run their on-call practice, and develop them. You'll also drive knowledge transfer into the client's internal engineering team so the infrastructure doesn't depend on any one person.
Delivery and reliability. CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and the observability stack. Security controls, compliance posture, and disaster recovery you've actually tested. When something breaks, you run the incident and turn the post-mortem into infrastructure changes that stick.
The roadmap. You'll work directly with the client's engineering leadership and PM to sequence infrastructure work against product goals, and you'll be the person in the room who can explain a technical trade-off to people who don't write code.
What We're Looking For
- 10+ years in infrastructure engineering or DevOps, with recent years running cloud-native production systems at scale.
- Deep Terraform practice. You've built and maintained module libraries other teams depend on, managed remote state and locking across environments, and dealt with drift and destructive plans in a live estate.
- Kubernetes in production. You've owned cluster lifecycle on EKS or GKE — provisioning, version upgrades, scaling strategy, and networking — and you know where the sharp edges are.
- Hands-on across AWS and GCP. IAM, compute, storage, networking, and managed databases in both, with genuine depth in at least one.
- Experience leading engineers. Direct reports or clear ownership of a team's technical direction, with a track record of raising the level of the people around you.
- Production ownership. You've carried the pager, run incident command, and used SLOs or error budgets to change how a team operates.
- Pipeline ownership. You've designed and run CI/CD — build, test gating, deployment strategy, rollback — not just used one someone else built.
- Strong communication. You can walk a non-technical stakeholder through an architectural trade-off and have them leave the conversation able to make a decision.
Nice to Have
- Experience managing offshore or distributed teams across time zones
- Infrastructure for AI/ML workloads — GPU capacity, model serving, MLOps platform work
- Multi-account or multi-project governance at scale (AWS Organizations, GCP folder hierarchies)
- Time in a fast-growth environment where you stood up the infrastructure function rather than inherited one
- HashiCorp Terraform Associate, Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect, or AWS Solutions Architect Professional
Work Environment
On-site Tuesday through Thursday in New York, remote Monday and Friday. Small team, direct access to engineering leadership, short path from decision to implementation. You'll have the autonomy to set the technical direction and the responsibility that comes with it.
Compensation & Terms
- Base: $160k–$180k annually (commensurate with experience and engagement structure)
- Engagement: 3-month initial term with potential for extension pending performance
- Start Date: On or about August 25, 2026
