Job Description

Overview
Join our dynamic team as a Wire Down Guard and become a vital part of maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly environment. A Wire Down Guard (also called a “downed wire guard,” “wire watcher,” or “site safety guard”) is responsible for protecting the public and utility workers when electrical wires fall, usually due to storms, vehicle accidents, or equipment failures.

Their main mission is public safety, making sure no one gets near the hazard until a qualified line worker arrives to make the scene safe.

Wire Down Guards are essential in storm response operations, emergency deployments, and utility restoration events. Please note: This position is a 1099 independent contractor role and is not a full-time employment position.

Duties

  • Arrive promptly and identify all potential hazards.
  • Maintain constant visual observation of the downed wire.
  • Prevent anyone from approaching the hazard.
  • Remain on-site until a qualified crew (line workers) arrives.
  • Redirect traffic or coordinate with law enforcement if needed.
  • Wear proper PPE (Hi-Vis vest, gloves, boots, hard hat depending on utility guidelines).
  • Never touch wires.
  • Keep a safe distance at all times.
  • Know the company’s emergency procedures.
  • Create a safe perimeter around the downed wire using cones, tape, or barriers.
  • Ensure no pedestrians, vehicles, or bystanders enter the danger zone.
  • Follow utility company safety clearances (often 30–50 feet minimum depending on conditions).

Qualifications

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Strong observational skills with the ability to remain alert during long shifts.
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with team members, visitors, and emergency responders.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and decisively while maintaining professionalism at all times.
  • Ability to stand for long periods
  • Calm under pressure
  • Basic understanding of utility safety rules
  • Professional interaction with public and emergency responders
