A LITTLE ABOUT US

GVEA is an electric cooperative that owns and maintains 3,491 miles of transmission and distribution lines, 35 substations, and 9 generating facilities. Our system is interconnected with Fort Wainwright, Eielson AFB, Fort Greely, Clear Space Force Station, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and all electric utilities throughout the Alaska Railbelt, extending from Homer to Fairbanks. Powering the Interior of Alaska, GVEA contributes to the economic, environmental, and social vitality of the communities we serve.

YOUR ROLE AS A SYSTEMS & NETWORK ENGINEER

As a Systems & Network Engineer, you'll design, implement, secure, and maintain the technology infrastructure that supports GVEA's electric utility operations. Working alongside experienced engineers and IT professionals, you'll support enterprise and industrial networks, server environments, cloud technologies, and cybersecurity systems that keep our business and critical infrastructure running.

You'll contribute to projects involving network and server administration, communications infrastructure, virtualization, cloud services, and cybersecurity while troubleshooting technical issues, monitoring system performance, supporting disaster recovery, and implementing new technologies. As you progress through the Engineer I, II, and III levels, you'll take on increasing responsibility for infrastructure design, technical leadership, and strategic technology planning.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

Successful candidates combine strong technical aptitude with excellent problem-solving and communication skills. You'll thrive in this role if you're able to analyze complex issues, manage multiple priorities, collaborate effectively with a variety of stakeholders, and adapt to evolving technologies in a fast-paced environment.

Knowledge and skills required for the position include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience).
  • Progressive experience in systems administration, network engineering, or related IT infrastructure roles.
  • Valid Alaska driver's license.
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise networking concepts, including LAN/WAN, routing, switching, DNS, firewalls, VPNs, and network security.
  • Experience administering Windows and Linux server environments.
  • Familiarity with virtualization platforms, storage systems, cloud technologies, and disaster recovery practices.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity principles, intrusion detection, vulnerability management, and industry best practices.
  • Experience with industrial control systems, SCADA, AMI, or utility operational technology is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, project management, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with employees, contractors, vendors, and external partners.
  • Relevant technical certifications (Cisco, Microsoft, Red Hat, Oracle, or similar) are preferred.
