Job Description

The Opportunity

At New York Light Source (NYLS), we believe that technical skills can be taught, but a drive to learn and an "eagle eye" for detail cannot. We are a fast-paced lighting distribution company in the heart of NYC, and we are looking for 2-3 motivated individuals to join our team as Junior Project Estimators.

If you are someone who loves solving puzzles, gets a weird sense of satisfaction from a perfectly organized spreadsheet, and wants to learn a specialized industry from the ground up, we want to talk to you. No prior lighting experience? No problem. We’ll provide the training; you provide the focus.

What You’ll Learn to Do

  • Analyze architectural drawings and decorative lighting schedules to account for every single fixture in a building.
  • Write up accurate quotations and navigate pricing with global manufacturers, reps, GCs, and ECs.
  • Develop the skill to spot errors in a document, like a missing quantity or a typo in a product code, before they become expensive mistakes.
  • Professionally communicate with contractors and customers to keep high-end NYC projects moving forward.
  • The tools of the trade, including Planswift and industry-specific quoting software.

What You Bring to the Table

  • An obsession with learning. You aren’t afraid to ask "why" or "how does this work?"
  • Extreme attention to detail. You’re the type of person who notices the small print.
  • Comfortable with numbers and basic math. You don't need to be a mathlete, but you should enjoy quantitative problem-solving.
  • Strong communication skills. You can explain your findings clearly and get excited when clarifying project scopes with clients.
  • A Bachelor’s degree is preferred (Engineering, Construction, or Design are great, but we value all backgrounds), but proficiency in MS Excel, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Windows 11 is a must.

Why Join NYLS?

  • Conveniently Located: Easily accessible, located near Penn Station on 36th and 6th Avenue.
  • Full Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, and 401(k) to support your life outside of work (after 6-month probation period and Local 3 Union induction).
  • Growth Path: We are looking for people who want a career, not just a job. As you learn, your responsibilities and compensation will grow with you.
  • Comprehensive Training: We don’t throw you in the deep end. You’ll work alongside experienced pros who will guide you through the nuances of the NYC lighting market.
