Position Overview

The Maintenance Technician perform general maintenance work in BHA owned and managed properties. This includes building exteriors, common areas, apartments, building systems, fixtures, and grounds. Our Building Operations Techs are required to participate in the on-call rotation, which covers night and weekend emergencies. Current rotation is once every 6-7 weeks.


Work Location and Other Requirements


This position is an in-person in Burlington, VT.


A valid driver’s license is required to fill carry out the duties of this position


Qualifications


While all applicants need to demonstrate a passion for supporting our residents and helping advance Burlington Housing Authority's mission, we recognize that some applicants may not possess all qualifications listed. We are willing to consider individuals who demonstrate comparable life experience and education in lieu of specific requirements, and/or the will, ability, and initiative to grow into new areas of responsibility.


Knowledge and Experience


  • Qualified candidates should have a minimum of two years of work in general building maintenance or building trades. The ideal candidate would have a demonstrated proficiency in building trades including carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, grounds keeping, and snow removal.
  • The physical activities for this position include squatting, ascending and descending ladders, scaffolding, and stairs, working in small or confined spaces, twisting and lifting up to 100 pounds, often repeating motions with wrists, fingers, and hands. This position works in all environmental conditions.
  • Technicians must be detail oriented, efficient, be able to work within time sensitive parameters, and able to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Having strong interpersonal skills and be sensitive to the needs of the elderly, disabled, and very low-income households is a must.
  • Completed high school or equivalency, or any equivalent trade school along with a combination of training and maintenance experience.
  • Must have the ability to perform painting and janitorial work, perform minor electrical and plumbing repairs, and to get along well with fellow employees and Residents.


Physical Requirements


Occasionally:

  • Ascends and descends ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time

Constantly:


  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces
  • Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one job site to another
  • Adjusting or moving objects
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Operating machinery / heavy equipment and/or power tools
  • Operating motor vehicles
  • Assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned
  • Communicating with others to exchange information

Environmental Conditions


Occasionally working in:

  • Low and high temperatures
  • Outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.

  • Hazardous conditions
  • Poor ventilation
  • Small and/or enclosed spaces

Physical Demands


Occasionally:

  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting and/or standing
  • Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds
  • Medium work that includes moving objects up to 50 pounds
  • Heavy work that includes moving objects up to 100 pounds or more

Total Compensation


Base wages Pay range is between $24.00 - $26.00 per hour. This is a full time position with benefits.


Benefits

  • Health Insurance (BHA covers between 80% to 83% of the premium for employees) or a $6,000 opt-out payment in lieu of BHA health insurance. (To qualify for the Opt-Out, proof of health insurance is required.)
  • Health Reimbursement Account. BHA pays 90% of the deductible as the insurance is being used. That's up to $2,880 for single enrollment and up to $5,760 for two-person and family
  • Flexible Spending and Dependent Care Accounts
  • Dental and vision insurance (Voluntary plans offered at a discounted group rate.)
  • Short and long term disability coverage (BHA pays 50% of discounted group rate)
  • Basic life insurance and accidental death (provided at no cost to employees)
  • Retire plan is a defined contribution plan. BHA makes annual contribution equal to 10% of base wages
  • Section 457 plan. BHA employees can contribute to this retirement plan
  • Employee Assistance Plan
  • Generous time off policy including 12 days of paid time off and 12 days of sick time in the first year. In addition to the paid time off, BHA recognizes 13 (paid) holidays and 2 (paid) floating cultural holidays.
