Job Title: Groundskeeper
Department: Facility Operations
Reports to: Lead Groundskeeper
Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Job Overview:
The Groundskeeper represents Mystic Aquarium with a positive, can-do attitude and a teamwork-focused work ethic at all times. This role performs tasks and operates equipment associated with the establishment and maintenance of the facility's grounds, including weeding, mulching, fertilizing, and trimming Aquarium plantings, and ensures that all areas are kept clean, neat, safe, and litter-free.
Primary Functions:
Grounds Maintenance and Equipment Operation
- Operate grounds care machinery, including mowers, weed trimmers, and blowers.
- Assist with the maintenance of all grounds plantings, including weeding, mulching, watering, fertilizing, trimming, and mowing.
- Assist with general maintenance tasks throughout the facility as needed.
- Perform tasks in a safe and efficient manner at all times.
Facility Appearance and Guest Relations
- Help maintain a safe and litter-free facility.
- Interact with guests and staff in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
Safety and Security
- Work in a safe manner at all times, properly using and maintaining all personal protective equipment (PPE) supplied for protection from recognized hazards.
- Report any unsafe conditions promptly.
- Maintain a working knowledge of facility-wide and department-specific safety procedures, including emergency evacuation, lockdown procedures, and fire extinguisher use.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Guest Service: Must be willing to consistently provide guest service above and beyond expectations.
- Experience: Experience with grounds maintenance and associated equipment is desired.
- Teamwork and Adaptability: Must be team-oriented and able to accept direction that is appropriate and effective.
- Physical Capability: Must be physically able to execute the work of the position, including the handling and operation of tools and machinery associated with grounds maintenance, and standing for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
- Licensure: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- Language Skills: Multilingual preferred; Spanish speaking preferred.
Physical Demands:
This role is performed primarily outdoors on the aquarium grounds, requiring consistent walking and extended periods in varied weather conditions, including heat, cold, and temperature changes. The position involves frequent close and distance vision, consistent hearing, and frequent verbal communication with guests and coworkers, along with some occasional work in confined areas, at heights, and around ladders, mechanical hazards, and cleaning agents. Employees must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as needed, move and operate grounds equipment, and occasionally drive, use computers, and use telephones as part of routine duties. Guest contact and collaboration with team members occur regularly throughout the workday.
